I recently been thinking about getting the Blackberry Curve 8330 thats coming out on Verizon so I go to talk to Verizon and I find out that if you get a Blackberry on Verizon you must (MUST) (not optional) get a data plan to goo with it. Data plans start from 24.99 for 10 megabytes and 49.99 for Unlimted. I cant pay that anyone know what I can do to avoid this?

I had a blackberry before my current one that did not actually have a data plan attached to it. They tried selling me one of the plans but i just told them ill pay as i go and they put it in the system. AT that time, I wasnt using much data, but now on my 8830 i had to get the unlimited plan.

I hate hearing about people being misinformed about this. They cannot make you get a data plan, though promo pricing is offered WITH a data plan. They're also trying to increase their commission and hit their data quota. I've seen it as I used to work in a store.

Yea its 29 for the unlimited but if you don't get some sort of plan you might not get a discount or rebate on the device.

get the data plan so you can get the promo price, and pay it for one month to get the $100 off or whatever it is, and then cancel the data part of the plan.

or just pay the $30/month, its really not all that much, just eat dinner at home instead of our one more day a month!

I was frustrated with this at one time also. I finally realized that the data plan is what makes the blackberry shine. I now don't understand why anyone would get a blackberry without the data plan. If you purchase the blackberry without the data plan I promise that you will not stay that way for long. It is amazing what the blackberry can do with the wealth of applications at your fingertips. Many of them for free.

With VZW you can purchase the berry by itself. But you won't reap the benefits if you had the data plan. Its useless 2 jus pay as u go or be w/out it. Plus you won't get anything off it would be like your jus paying full retail price and that sucks!

How did you swing this? I only get 10MB/month for $25. I thought the unlimited data plan is $45/month.

If you are not in need of the Corporate BES plan, then there is an UNlimited plan for $29.00/month from Verizon:

Someone has this in their signature line: Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Email and Web $29.99 feature code 73618

I guess theres no reason to get BB if your not getting a data plan. You cant use it for anything. And if you pay as you go your going to pay alot more per mth then if you just got the unlimited plan.

There are different plans its 29.99 for BIS its 45.99 or something for BES and don't let the person at the store confuse it with the PDA data plan which is 44.99. Make sure tis the Blackberry one for BIS users its only 29.99

You can get a BB and not have a data plan, but a BB without one is pointless. If you want a phone with a task mgr and calendar get a palm device. It's more of an entry level PDA.

I understand your point, but I would never direct anyone to a Palm smartphone. I LOVE palm's calendar and task manager, and if I couldnt get by without them, I would buy a palm PDA and carry a seperate cell phone before I went back to a treo...and I hear centro isnt really an improvement!

But thankfully I discovered BB and wont have to worry about carrying two devices or being frustrated by palm!

Verizon has updated their pricing for data plans. As of today, all pricing for Blackberry & PDA Smartphones alike are $29.99 per month for unlimited data. Guess Windoze & Palm users thought they were getting the shaft.

Where do you see that? Unless the 450 voice plan is now $50(from $40), it's $40 unlimited access for all pda's and blackberry's, for a total of $79.99 per month.

It won't let me post a URL, so you'll have to go to Verizon's website to see what I'm referring to.

    Enter your location

The cheapest voice + data plan is 79.99 for both pda and blackberry devices. That's 450 minutes.

Here's the listing, well at least for Windoze, and at current (launch) only a few handsets.

i work for VZW and it IS REQUIRED that the data feature be added. there is a $100 unl "advanced device credit" that applies if you CHOOSE the unlimited plan (either 29.99 or 44.99) with a qualifying voice plan. you do not get this credit if you choose the 24.99 10mb plan. but since the new 29.99 unlim plan has launched i have not sold any of the 10mb plan. the data plan is not required on PDA/smartphone to be active but is required to recieve any advanced device credit.

To require a consumer to buy something that isn't necessary is fraudulent. I understand why Verizon does it (to avoid large data usage charges), but you cannot disallow a sale b/c someone doesn't want an optional feature. They just won't receive the credit being offered.

By your logic, if I were to walk into a Verizon store and want to buy the Curve WITHOUT the data plan you'd refuse the sale? That's very pompous and asinine. Also, that's fraudulent to require an add-on feature that is a monthly charge to be added to someone's plan if they do not want it.

I agree with many of the above posters, why would you want a Blackberry without a data plan? That's just as asinine as any carrier requiring you to have a feature you may never use.
