This doesn't seems to be about just the DROID X... but more about allowing as many people eligible for upgrades, to go ahead and upgrade now to a 3G type phone. And have them locked in for two years on a slower 3G phone, right before the new 4G network starts rolling out next year.

Interesting note... "Must Keep 3G Smartphone"
This literally means that the cost of this promotion is $29.99x20 or $600.
This is no deal. Under normal circumstances you can dump the phone.
    Not in this case. BEWARE!!!!

They called me about this and I kindly told the caller that I would wait and see what the other carriers have for service, phones, and prices when my contract ends.

I never thought of it like that before. I'd been seeing and reading up on the promotion online, but didn't think like that.

Plus the fact that 4G is almost here too makes it all the more suspicious!

I guess I'm not reading this clearly, what's the meaning of 'must keep 3G smartphone' as in you trade your old model in & they keep it in order to receive the upgrade?

I got a text message about this on Saturday:

FREE Verizon Msg: You're eligible to upgrade EARLY to any phone w/new 2yr agrmt. Call 800-207-2067 or visit a local Verizon store! To opt-out rply X

So I guess that is what they were referring to. But in the text msg it says ANY phone but, on the promo sheet it says it has to be a 3G smart phone. I thought about going in and getting a new phone, but maybe I'll wait til the 4G phones come out. I can get a new phone in March anyway.

    Yeah, you're reading it wrong.
Look at the content of the original.
It does say that you must keep the phone.
I think that implies that you must keep the data plan.

I would make sure that is or is not the case before I upgrade using that particular promo.

Makes you wonder if VZW give RIM any heads-up on promotions like this, because RIM sure seems to be leaving us STROM1 users with NE2 dates coming up out in the cold.
If Rumors are correct and the S3 is not coming out until Spring of next year...

Android 2.2 looks to be a very fast and stable OS, and as a Star Wars fan the R2-D2 special addition of the DROID 2 looks to irresistible.

    N00B Question here...

Lets say that you have 12 months left and do this promo.

Would that ADD 24 months (36 months total) or are you starting a NEW 24 month contract?

New 24 months. So essentially, adding an extra year.
