I've only had my BB a week or so and today I woke up to this message:

"There is insufficient network coverage to process your request. Please try again later."

I am not in a new place, it's always worked before. Do I need to re-start the BB? Is this Verizon's problem?

I had this happen once before when I was on the extended network with really low signal strength (-101 db). Once I saw the signal strength increase, I resent my request and everything was business as usual.

Yes this only happens to me when I barely have any signal, generally when I'm on the DC metro to and from work.

Well, there was no reason for low signal strength so I restarted the phone and everything was fine again.

Thats weird, my 8830 has signal when Im on metro. I go from Union Station to Dunn Loring everyday and its fine. I only hit a snag around Ballston and somtimes arround Rosslyn. You might want to update the PRL (*22899) and if that dont work have VZW check your phone.

I go from College Park to Fort Totten to New York Ave. The stretch on the red line from FT to NY is fine but it's when I'm on the Green line that it isn't that reliable. Thanks for the reminder about the PRL.

I'm familiar w/ the "*228" for regular vzn cell phones, but what is the "*22899" for? Same functional equivalent for a bb?

*22899 is just a shortcut dial to skip past having to pick option 1 when you dial *228.

*22899 is not advisable for PDA's or Phones. Yes this will do both options, but not needed once the phone is programmed. *228, Opt 2 should be done every 30-60 days to update the prefered roam list in the device (tower info). THe *22899 is designed for devices like aircards or usb modems that cannot be dialed. Also the 99 option can reset lock codes in phones back to default. Tech at VZW should no longer advise to do a *22899 on any phone or PDA.

And now when you do a *228 on a Z10 (in San Diego) the phone no longer dials into an automated service asking you to pick option 1 or 2. There is no ringing or pickup, the phone instantly gives an onscreen message "Your wireless service has been activated and roaming has been enabled". The additional "99" is meaningless now.
