I have an 8830 BB/Verizon. Is there a setting on the I can use that will make sure I don't rack up data roaming surcharges from other carriers? I've had a cell phone for years, but I'm worried I'm going to get a ton of e-mails pushed through some other network not covered by my standard VZ plan.

most of the carriers have space rented out on other carriers towers for roaming and even in the extended areas it should be fine - but if you wanted to double check you could go to verizonwireless.com and look up the map for your area
and see or just dial *611 on ur hand set and ask a customer service rep

If you're on a modern plan (I'd say within the last 2 years or so), roaming should be covered. If you're concerned about it, there is a way to force your BB to Home-only. On my Curve, it goes something like this. Go into Manage Connections from the home screen and go to Mobile Network Options. There should be an option for "Network Selection Mode". Change that to "Home-only".
