Other devices can connect to an enterprise, like Palm, WinMo or Android, this just allows them to connect to a centralized server that transfers the needed data...
If you are thinking about Blackberry Enterprise Service, then yes, only BB's can connect to a BES.
    Ahhh. Thanks for the clarification.

Yes. Former Alltel customer. Does that mean I'm not getting the full monty with my Verizon accout?

In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm still on a grandfathered in Alltel plan.
No that doesn't mean anything like that. It just means you are in a vested Alltel area. So you have an Alltel Hybrid PRL.

Does the prl help with signal strength on a phone. My bold keeps gaining and losing bars. And maybe I'm thinking that helps it. I dunno. Any help?

Well you thought wrong, but itsa ok.
Really? I thought Blackberries connected to Exchange servers through Enterprise servers and other smartphones connected directly to the Exchange server.

Or maybe for you I should be more specific and say Blackberry Enterprise Server.

I am kinda a newbie on this but does the prl version differ from device to device because I have something different than others. I have a 8530 with a 52011 and my wife has a 8330 with a 52031 and we are both on big red (verizon). Thanks in advance.

I just updated my PRL on VZW in Vegas, it's 52257.
To check and see what version you have dial #4357* and hit send.

Just tried to update both phones...got the usual message "please continue to hold while your phone is being programmed," more music, then the message "we are unable to program your phone. Please call (the customer service number) for assistance." First time this ever happened in all the years I've been using VZW.

I didn't bother to call tonight since it's not an emergency, maybe the OTA programming service is temporarily out of commission. Will try again tomorrow to see what happens.

Update - worked just fine tonight. Must have been a temporary outage on the OTA server. 9650 has 52280, 9630 has 52257.

That's typical for me too. I just updated both phones (personal and work phones) tonight at the same time. 9650 has 52280, 9630 has 52257.

I think there's also a variance by location, which probably depends on the coverage in one's specific area (so, therefore, how much "roaming" your phone may have to do). I've noticed in the past when we post our update results that different users, even with the same phone model, might get different versions. Whatever is "the latest" for your particular phone and area will maximize your phone's performance.

Give it a try...that's what it's for... to help your phone find the best signal as quickly as possible, wherever you are. It's a free service, might as well use it.

I don't worry about the bars on the screen too much...they seem to vary often, but I almost never have a REAL problem with getting a signal, in terms of being able to make or receive calls, browse, or whatever else I'm doing on the phone.

But if you are having real issues, and live in an area that normally gets good coverage, don't forget to check your network settings.

    Options>Mobile network>Network technology

Since the 9650 is a world phone, it may be set to "global." If you're in your home coverage area, changing to the 1XEV setting will tell your phone not to keep scanning for a bunch of other kinds of signals that aren't available or needed. Might also save some battery life too.
