The website Walletpop has posted this report today.

Leaving your wireless carrier can be an expensive undertaking, and starting Nov. 15 it's about to get more expensive for users of smartphones like the Motorola Droid, Blackberry Storm 2 and other "advanced devices" on the Verizon Wireless network.

While employees have been ordered not to talk to customers about the change, starting on Nov. 15, the Early Termination Fee (ETF) for these devices will increase from $175 to $350. According to a leaked document the higher ETF, "fairly reflects the higher costs associated with offering feature rich advanced devices to customers at attractive prices."

Early Termination Fees, or ETFs as they are commonly called, are a continual player in the of a love-hate relationship consumers have with cell phones. When consumers get a new phone they love the discount that comes from signing a two-year contract, but when a cool new phone, like the iPhone, comes out they hate having to pay to break the contract.

Even though we generally despise fees and have a special feeling of spite for fees that get raised, given the increased retail cost of new phones like the iPhone, Motorola Droid and others this increase was inevitable.

For example when you sign a new two-year contract for the hyped Motorola Droid on Verizon's network you qualify for a discount of $360 with an additional $100 in discounts if you use a New Every Two agreement on at Verizon.

So, in exchange for two years of voice and data payments, Verizon is giving you a discount of between $360 and $460. In comparison, "feature phones" like the LG Dare often receive a subsidy of -- $200.

If you aren't happy with the new fee for "advanced devices" you can always choose to pay more when you get your phone; but given that the $350 ETF decreases by $10 every month and that's about the amount you save by signing a contract you may be better off taking your chances and getting the discount now.

Keep in mind that if you have a calling plan over $49.99 you are eligible for a subsidized phone on Verizon after just one year with a contract renewal.

Verizon Wireless was contacted, but did not respond for comment.

You think maybe you could read enough to see the thread AT THE TOP that covers this exact same thing?

Mods, please close this - Sprint trolls don't know Sprint is raising theirs too.

I was just giving Verizon Customers a heads up. I wasn't tying to rub it in.

What is it with some of you Verizon users. Are you so touchy feely over a simple post that you can't accept the fact that it wasn't intended to be malicious? If you have no use for the info, or are so upset about the fact that you are being hosed. Then beat your head against your phone and get over it. I don't care if you don't think, and as to the question of whether any one needed a heads up. That's your opinion. The majority of other Verizon users didn't act like you. Maybe they appreciated the info, and if they didn't. Like sensible adults. They just gaffed it off. You and the previous individual who seem to have taken offense to a simple post need to grow up. This isn't a board for customers of a specific provider. this is a board for users of Blackberry's. No matter your provider. So if I see something that might help another BB owner no matter the provider. I will post it. Then barring that the Mods deem it inappropriate. Maybe someone will find it of some use. If Sprint, AT&T, or any other provider plans to do something similar. I hope someone will post it for those of us who might not have heard yet. So that as a community of BB users we can help each other. Nuff said.

Pretty simple - you don't post in the VZW forums except to post duplicate threads about old or currently in progress discussions & news. We don't want the VZW forums to be cluttered with crap like the Sprint forums.

Also, you're showing ignorance by making erroneous assumptions. How many Sprint lines of service do you personally carry? I have four - make note of my device list above - so take your "Verizon users" venom back to the Sprint forums. We're ahead of the curve here & you made it obvious you're behind it.

I think the point Twins was trying to make is that there are already multiple threads on this issue already, and if you would like to post something about it, a more appropriate way to do so would be to go to one of the threads that already exist rather than starting another one to clutter up the forums. Redundancy is...well...redundant.

If duplicate threads get you that fired up, maybe it's time for a break from the forums. The best thing to do, IMHO, is report it and move on.
