This is the second time I've had this happen to me. Verizon blackberrys are not supposed to let you go over 160 in an sms. This morning when I was typing an sms at the top it said (at the beginning before I started typing) "160 1/6" and when I went over 160 it let me overflow and went to 2/6 and so on. When I sent that sms and tried to make another it didn't have the x/6 at the top. This is the second time I've had this happen. Can anyone explain this?

It will let you type all day, and it will break the message down at its break points. It will send it as part 1,2,3 and so on.

Yeah I understand that. I'm not that dumb. But verizon blackberrys will not let you overflow. They make you create a whole new sms after 160 characters and will not let you overflow. However mine did let me overflow. But now it won't anymore.

For me it works differntly on my Verizon Tour. The only time I can over 160 in an SMS is if someone on Verizon sends me a text longer than 160. Then, when I reply I can go over 160. it doesn not break it up into multiple messages though. It just lets me type it out as if I were typing in an MMS field. Other wise I manually have to type multiple messages. It has never broken them up into multiple messages for me ie. 1/6, 2/6 etc...
I have had an 8830, 8330, 9530 and now a 9630 and I have never seen the messages break up on their own.

Would be great if this just started happening all of a sudden. I thought that the CDMA Blackberrys themselves had the limitation built in, so that even if a CDMA carrier decided to invoke enhanced SMS, giving the ability to type more than 160 charcahters, that a CDMA Blackberry would still not allow it.

ok, I got what your saying now. you could, now you cant and why? Verizon has some strict rules because I didnt know there were any restrictions with any carriers while using a smartphone. Post a fix when you figure it out.

Have you changed anything letely? upgrade OS?

Yeah it did let me and now it doesn't. And nope I haven't changed anything. Same OS, didn't change any options. Nothing. This was with my tour. And last time it happened it was with my 8830. This is very strange

Yes there are apps. But I don't have one. I haven't modded my tour. I haven't changed the OS. I haven't changed anything. Just a normal tour.

Mine won't do it either. I know that with dumbphones, you can send messages longer than 160 characters on verizon, to another verizon phone, but my 8330 won't.

Quick question and slightly off topic, why does the CDMA format restrict sms to 160?

If I remember right, there was something about something with an emergency setting? maybe? that had allowed people to do this once.

If anyone knows anything about this, maybe it can enlighten the OP because my rememberance is sketchy at best.

It's because you are sending it as an mms message. When you get a text with over 160 characters it's actually an mms. So thats why you can type for ever.

No, if I keep typing it is an SMS. It breaks it at 160 and sends the message as part 1, 2, 3, etc...not sure why that's not the case for Verizon.

Did it allow over 160 on a fresh text, or were they only replies?

It was a fresh txt. It was not a reply

I know what happened cause I've done it. When you have a contact saved in BBM as a SMS contact. You can type over the 160 limit.
