I laugh at donkey-clowns who drive SUV's too. 1/5 of the people who have em, need em.
And for 3/5 of the ones who need them, they could get a station wagon for any 5 door to do the same thing.

Anyway I think the May 2009 release date is reasonable I guess Id like to wait for it to drop in price a little bit before I pick it up. The Pearl 8130 will hold me over.

I'm on Verizon and need a new phone -- and will be getting a Blackberry (I don't have a smart phone at present). I would get the Curve but it will kill me to see a new model with double the resolution. I'm a sucker for great screens.

I'm on a company discount with Verizon, plus there is inertia to stay on Verizon because of friends and family that also use it (in-calling). I really hope I don't have to wait until May for the Niagra or the Bold to come to Verizon! I can wait 2 or 3 months but it will be hard to wait longer, as my current phone is not serving me adequately.

If I bought the Curve now, I assume I'd be stuck with it for two years. Understanding that it's speculation, how much might it cost for me to upgrade to a Javelin or Bold if I got the Curve now and the new model in 6 months?

Thanks, and I think Crackberry.com is awesome!

take a look at the price point for a new rodgers bold w/ no contract. $650! Who knows, don't be surprised if its up in that price range.

oh and upgrading in 6 months? Don't count on it. Everyone on the crack is saying 6 months for the thunder (maybe) who knows when the javelin or the bold comes to CDMA.

Ha ha, I think you are way off.

I have heard from a Verizon employee that Thunder should be here before the end of the year. But even if that's true, Verizon is just proving that it has the lamest phones by getting the one new Blackberry that most Blackberry users don't want.

I don't think Verizon is SO lame, however, that it will not have a Blackberry with an upgraded screen for years when every other carrier has one.

pilotguy, thanks for the price estimate - $650 for a new phone would suck big time. I'd much rather pay the early termination fee and go to another carrier.

There's a wildcard in device availability for VZW, starting in December. That's when the VZW network is supposed to become open to any device meeting Verizon's published specifications.

I'm not sure how much that will matter for RIM, but it could mean that they could offer CDMA devices without going through Verizon's QA and marketing processes. That might help speed things up a bit. It should also help by allowing device manufacturers to do things like offer phones with unlocked GPS, or with both GPS and Wi-Fi, and so on.

I don't think anybody knows just how fast we are likely to see CDMA phones offered directly by manufacturers, or what the prices will be on service plans from VZW, but there could be some pretty major changes (for better or for worse) around the end of the calendar year.

^ You have a lot more Blackberry experience than I, and I do not doubt your past successful predictions.

But my business sense believes that Verizon, no matter how conservative they are with their phones (especially WRT their imposed interface) and how they rely on their dominant network and entrenched user base to avoid being competitive on phones and prices, would not wait over one year from now before introducing a new Blackberry, and wait several years from now to catch up to the other carriers' luxury product. I don't think they will let themselves fall that far behind.

But even if you are right part of the way, that still means a long wait before Verizon has a non-touch-screen Blackberry with a higher-resolution screen, which would really bum me out.

I wish Verizon would add the myfav from Alltel!
This would be fantastic! Or even just one or two "exception" lines on another network-

Generally speaking, if you are 1 year into a 2-year contract, Verizon will sell you a phone/pda/whatever at the subsidized, new-customer price.

But you have to re-sign for another 2 years, and your NE2 credit is voided and reset to zero.

And sometimes, if you're close to the end of your 2 year contract but want your NE2 credit early, they often give it to you anyway, if you lean on them hard enough and are patient enough to keep trying even if the first person said "no."

What they don't want is to lose you as a customer. It's called churn rate and they hate it, so don't be afraid to make polite but veiled threats to switch to their arch rival, you know who.

VZW is a big complicated company, with their over-the-phone sales department and corporate retail stores are staffed by a combination of absolute fools, and very smart people with wizard-like powers. Luck of the draw who you deal with, but if you don't get something reasonable, try again with someone else on the CS number, or better yet, at one of their corporate stores.

I've had my best luck by far walking in to their shops on a slow day and asking for a manager. You will be intercepted by eager new hires who slept through the training process, so just politely ignore them and wait for the manager.

Their online presence, OTOH, is rigid and inflexible by nature. And don't even think about doing the online chat thing, those people are the bottom feeders with no clue at all about anything, in my limited experience. You're much better off simply calling VZW and waiting...and waiting...and waiting to get through if you don't have a corporate outlet near you.

::sigh:: its things like this that make me want to switch from verizon. cdma are always the last to get everything!
-gasp- BLASPHEMY! And the only reason CDMA is the [usually] last to get everything, is because CDMA programming is more expensive- but it is safer, and overall, better in signal. And if you look at the 8310 vs. the 8330- the 8330 is so much better in programming, capabilities, and the whole 9.

The Verizon/Alltel buyout is opening alot of doors for us as a company alone, let alone as consumers. Once the FCC approves everything, Verizon is going to be the ONLY fully-nationwide carrier [that doesn't roam on others towers]. Not to mention, in CDMA, it is easier to waive roaming charges [as VZW does, vs. AT&T's $.30 per minute + minutes] because of the frequencies.

Verizon has alot of good phones out, and our Curves top any other- yes, the Bold is nice, but its a glorified Curve, tbh. Don't get down about it! We'll see what happens!

The word I've heard is that the Bold will be out to Verizon customers by the end of the year. There's a 2 month exclusivity window between the release with AT&T and when Verizon can launch it. Keep in mind that the Thunder is supposed to be released in October, but the word is that's been pushed to December. JazzyGee made a good point. Will they want to revamp their marketing plans to give the Thunder more of a push? I wouldn't be at all surprised, if they end up being able to market both at the same time, to see the Bold pushed until at LEAST a month after the Thunder. You'll see an ad blitz from Verizon and RIM on it, so they won't want to overshadow the Thunder with a release of another blackberry device on their network.

We'll see. I'm waiting for the Thunder myself. I've been a diehard BlackBerry user for six years, but find myself mainly reading emails now a days. If I'm responding, it's brief, so losing the QWERTY for a nifty touch screen doesn't sway me. I bought my 8703e on eBay just so I wouldn't have a problem upgrading to the Bold or Thunder when they came out.

The Bold sure is purdy though, isn't it?

I did forget to leave these links. If you're ever wondering what phones are coming out for who, and who's going to be able to do what, these two sites are best:
