I was activating my bold 9930 from my Z10 today on the Verizon online chat. The lady asked for the Sim card number which i didnt need a Sim last time i activated the 9930 so i asked her why i needed a Sim card and when did they start taking Sims because i know when i got the phone there was never a Sim card in it, the lady responded that it can be used on the 4g network which i never even thought was possible. mind you this was on the Verizon online chat so who knows if the rep even knew what she was talking about, seems bogus but im not sure now. anyone else know?

Probably a marketing gimmick (3G on steroids). Ask her if it's LTE, If she says yes, then she's flat out lying.

They're most likely talking about HSPA+, which is often referred to as 4G but is not as fast as LTE.

You can use your 4G sim on any 2G/3G enabled phone but you won't get any 4G features.

I know that because when sent my Z10 to EE for repairs, I was given a old 2G Nokia phone and it worked with my 4G sim

AFAIK, Verizon uses pre-installed Verizon SIM cards only for its LTE network...which this phone can't use. The 9930 may have a empty SIM slot, but that might be for "world phone" features.

There's a way to activate phones online too. Log in to your Verizon account, if you have one.

    '4G' yes, 4G LTE, no.

But Verizon's '4G' (i.e. faster than 3G but not quite LTE) network is pretty small, no?

The SIM card is for world phone capability, not Verizon 4G LTE. The SIM allows you to use your 9930 overseas on GSM networks. I was just in Ireland, and that's how it worked for me. Trust me it was not 4G over there either! This is a 3G only phone.

This is correct, I had a 9930 and it came with a Verizon SIM, that was only good for the world phone functions. The 9930 is definitely not 4G.
