I just received a call back in response to the nastygram I sent VZW last night. She wanted to troubleshoot the issue with me. I told her thousands of people have reported this, and it's on the home page of several popular internet tech sites, but in typical VZW CS fashion, she said they have different internet than I have, and that she couldn't find any info about it when she searched the internet. She's sending me some other number to call, so I can troubleshoot it when I'm not at work.

For those just tuning in, it appears that it's just affecting Storm2 users. It's not too troubling that they changed the default search engine - that should be fixable in the browser settings. The problem is that they set the default and REMOVED ALL OTHER SEARCH PROVIDER OPTIONS. How is it a default if there's nothing else to use?

I got the Bing icon, just hid it though. I'm using a Storm 9530 with OS 5.0 and I still have search options, although oddly enough Bing isn't even one of them.

Same here. I'm running the 5.0 leak though and have been for quite some time. I just sent service books to my phone and still have all the search options.

They seem to be pushing this out slowly as I did not have it at first but did last night, Im sure everyone here will eventually have it. If Bing isnt one of your search options yet it will soon be your only option.

Why even have a drop down box to select a search engine if there's only going to be one available? That's poor design. If you were intended to only be able to use a single search engine from the quick search text entry box on the browser, then RIM wouldn't have written the code into the Browser to support selecting a search engine from a drop down box. I believe this constitutes a reduction in service capabilities of the phone and there may be legal avenues we can pursue with Verizon.

I know we all read our contracts with Verizon, right? (... right?) But essentially they cannot cripple the phone after we buy it. When we bought our phones they allowed us to select from multiple search engines. Now we cannot. This is removing a feature which was present at purchase and now is there no longer.

Actually switch the browser to Live and then run a search in it. You will get Bing for the results. Live no longer exists, it points to Bing.
Yes Live.com redirects you to Bing.com but Bing is actually a new search engine and that was my point. It's a much better search engine than the Live was and is useful for some types of searches but Google is still a better general search engine.

Its just Bing for me too. Someone else has probably already noted this, but its not the 428 update. I'm still running 320 and noticed it for the first time this morning. Last time I searched, Tuesday I think, I still had google.

Are 3rd party browsers like Bolt having the same problem? If not I'll probably try Bolt (tried Opera once and didn't like it so its a last resort).

OK people I understand why you're all upset but really - ? It's just a search engine. Is this really worth all the hand-wringing and mouth frothing - ? lol.

Don't we all have better things to worry about than what search engine on my way-cool advanced smartphone was forced upon us? I mean - aren't their other things to get in a wad about?

    Perspective.

For me, its just annoying that I PAID for a service knowing I could search on Google right from the homepage and now I have to work around it. Its not too bad to work around, but this is all principle and about protecting us consumers in the future.

In my opinion, this is operating on the same principle as if Verizon decided to take the calendar function our BlackBerries. Forcibly removing services that you originally paid for.

Well. I tried not to restart my phone or resend service books but I was forced too. Wasn't getting my emails. And as suspected I lost all search engine options except Bing. Hopefully this is just one big mistake. I'd hate to have to switch devices.

Don't tell us what we should and shouldn't care about on our phones. We wouldn't be on a Blackberry specific site if we were not power users (unlike you). I used the Google search multiple times daily, so don't tell me that I shouldn't care. I shouldn't be forced to use workarounds because of corporate negligence.

I get what you're saying. Its not that big of a deal in the grand scheme that is life, but we have to protect ourselves.

I run a website with blogs on it. I type in the name of one of the blogs on Google and the first result I get is the link to it. On Bing, it doesn't even recognize the words I'm typing in and asks me I meant to search fpr something else. This blog has been around for six months so they've had time for it to be indexed. Bing is just an inferior search engine.

And their main color is even RED! That's all the proof we need right there, isn't it?

In case you Red-hunters didn't notice, the Bing switch appears to have been the result of a profit-motivated business decision made by and between capitalists. Sucks when the profit motive actually works to reduce your choices and freedoms, huh?

    That aside....

I wouldn't be surprised if there is something in all of our contracts that says Verizon has reserved the right to do things like this. Credit card companies and banks are allowed to change the terms of the contract if they see the need, so why not phone companies too? So I feel like protesting will probably get us nowhere. As usual, the only effective protest will be voting with your dollars. If you want them to think twice about what they are doing, you probably had better be willing to buy Droids at the very least, or downgrade to a dumbphone, or perhaps even make the jump to a carrier that doesn't limit your search options when your contract is up (or pay the ETF, whichever is cheaper for you). Not a very appetizing thought, given the limitations of the other carriers, I know.

Two things really stink about this. First, they are denying us the option to use Dictionary and Wikipedia search so Microsoft can get more money - if what everyone else is saying here is true about Dictionary and Wikipedia search going away. It hasn't happened to me yet. Those sites are not competitors to Microsoft, and it makes it harder (marginally, yes) for us to find out what we want. Second, they are trying to have us use what I believe is an inferior product that is trying to buy its way into relevance. Bing has its defenders, but I am not convinced that its search results are any better than Google's.

When it happens to me - and I fully expect it to - I will be calling Verizon to let them know about my displeasure. I don't appreciate the attempt to force me to use what is, to my mind, an inferior product. I think a displeased phone call is an appropriate response, even if it does not work to produce immediate results.
