The fact that they can control what goes on MY PHONE is enough to irk me off BIG TIME. No other platform allows this. This is a downfall of the RIM platform in my opinion.

I'm calling Verizon tomorrow and I'm going to biatch up a storm until they ditch my contract and allow me to leave peacefully as I'm sure WE as the customer have rights! Honestly... Any court would say this is illegal. A company changing property you OWN AGAINST YOUR WILL?!??! I don't think so people.

Thats pretty much the principal of it. They can offer updates that I can choose to instal or 3rd party apps and such that change aspects of the phone that I can choose to instal. They can also choose to not offer features on later devices or not offer certain features to begin with. Its like if I walked into subway and got a sandwich. Lets say I got salt, pepper and oregano on the sandwich along with everything else. Would it be ok for the guy behind the counter to walk over to me after im halfway through my footlong and take the oregano off the sandwich? While it wont impact the flavor much and I can barley notice the difference because I also got banana peppers and their southwest sauce on the sandwich, was this what I payed for? Sure they can choose to not offer me oregano next time I order a sandwich but im pretty sure most of you would freak out if someone took something small off of something you bought physically. Verizon just did the same thing virtually.

Exactly. Honestly I would not mind if Verizon said ok customers... We are putting Bing as the default search engine. And left it at that, still allowing you to CHOSE what you want to use and NOT STRIP OUR CHOICES FROM US THAT WE IN A SENSE PAID FOR AND SIGNED UP FOR WHEN WE GOT THE PHONE AND CONTRACT! Them changing something like this is DEFINITELY enough to do some damage.

If I have to, I'll go the long route and post on planetfeedback and for the heck of it the BBB. I do know one thing. They DO listen to planetfeedback. And another thing. They WILL answer for this either to me, or the irate customers. RIM's forum, this forum, and now the Verizon forum are not getting hammered due to this. Not to mention the letters and emails/calls customers are doing.

This entire thing stinks of bad business.

Not exactly true. Right now the only way Droid can get apps is through the Google Market Place. I believe that unless you jailbreak a iPhone you are stuck with whatever they offer. If anything RIM offers more choices from different vendors.

Any court would say it's illegal? No more then when you are watching a television show on your television on lets say NBC and they stream in one of their little promos for either the next show or an upcoming show. It's Verizon's network, not yours. They can do what they want with it.

I'm lost here. I have an ATT Bold 9000 on a BES. So I'm not a Verizon customer.

And I don't know what a "default" search engine is on a BB. We have 3 types of browsers (BES, WAP, and regular). From any of these browsers we can enter any URL.

So if you type google.com in your browser it goes to bing.com?

One of the first things I do after updating my OS is download the Google apps pack with search, maps, etc... So I don't really care what kind of icons ATT drops on my phone because I end up moving all of them into a "Junk" folder then I hide that folder.

    ****EDIT
OK, was just perusing this thread and now see what the fuss is about but I don't see why this pisses people off other than the fact that Verizon "mucked" with your BB.

I've never used that built in search anyway. Download the Google Mobile app and you can avoid that built-in search.

I still have Google, Live Search, Wikipedia and Dictionary.com in my browser. I did noticed that Verizon pushed a Bing icon to my phone sometime on Sunday.
This is the same for me. I just got the Bing icon last week. Still have my normal search options.

On my Verizon Storm 9530 I have all the normal search providers (google, live search, wikipedia, dictionary.com) and NO BING in the default browser (blackberry's) I did remove the Bing app after it was pushed to my device a couple of months ago. It was slow and kept bringing up extraneous info not related to GPS enabled search.

It is their network but they can not forcibly remove features from a phone we bought. Its not a matter of choices for everything all the time, its a matter of keeping the choices available when from when we bought toe hoewe choose.

Look at my previous post, by that logic, its subways store, while im eating there they have the right to take or add whatever they want to the sandwich I already bought while im eating it.

Why do they have to bring Wikipedia into this? Wikipedia is not competition to Bing, or Google for that matter. They are run by Wikimedia Foundation, a NON-PROFIT company. Whose call was that in this deal between verizon and ms? They've removed options that have nothing to do with Google VS Bing on verizon phones.

No, sorry, the BING APP is not related to this at all.

I had the Virtual PreLoad (VPL) icon for the Bing App on my Storm2 that was pushed down by VZW, but never used the link to install it. Instead I just hid the icon.

My search provider choices were changed.

So yesterday, after reading someone post in the thread discussing the .428 leak about installing/uninstalling the BING app should fix it, I tried it to see if it did get me Google, Wikipedia and Dictionary.com back.

I used the VPL icon to be taken to the web page, agreed to the T&C's, and proceeded to download/install the BING app. I did a battery pull (just for good measure), then went into Options -> Applications and un-installed the BING app. I checked the browser, still only BING was there as a search provider. I pulled the battery, and again, only BING is there.

This problem is NOT related to any app you might have installed. This problem is NOT due to any VPL icon they've pushed to your blackberry.

This problem appears to be related to the service books VZW is pushing to your blackberry.

I could care less if they ADDED Bing as a choice for search provider. I could care less if they Added BING AND made it the default when it was added.

I doesn't bother me that I have to enter google.com if I want to search via google.

But I for one do NOT like that they REMOVED all of the other search providers as options without notice, without warning, and without giving any kind of reason/explanation. And that is the root of my gripe!

ODD, I still have all mine and have had Bing installed as well for awhile now, still all there even after 3 reboots this morning. I do have the .428 leak installed, don't know if that has anything to do with it, not sure why it would. Oh well, guess I should be grateful

Update: Guess I spoke too soon, mines went away now too
What a bunch of "communist, socialist, bull****e" Wonder if Obama had anything to do with this

To me this sounds like all the law suits against MS over the years where the courts have told them they have to make other browser available on their OS's or provide other search engines as default options in IE. With the FTC and DOJ constantly looking at Microsoft and Verizon, this may be an issue for them soon.

This is not a deal breaker for me to want to switch providers or phones, but it is irritating that they would take it away. Writing VZW and expressing your displeasure will make them think about this before making a deal like this again. It may not make a difference here but if you don't say anything they will not care later.

Look back at the GPS issue with VZW. They didn't open it up on the newer devices (Storm 9530 and later) because they felt generous. They did it because of complaints they received.

Let your voice be heard at VZW Customer Service. But do it nicely. Remember Santa is watching.

One of the reasons I heart Google so much is they aren't Microsoft. I will resort to never using the native browser to search anymore and only using Opera. I am just pissed off at Verizon's big brother attitude that they can just push crap to our phones because they can. I already have like six icons I have to hide because I can't delete them. Now I can't google search as easily as I did. WTF is next?!
