Anyone from Telus here know if I can purchase a "device" only under "no contract" without getting a plan whatsoever? I tried adding to cart and was only asked if I required a SIM card...

I'll be honest, I plan to have the phone unlocked and use it with a GSM provider.

will this still work if i purchase it outright and get my device unlocked?
I'm afraid they may put the imei # on the national blacklist if they dont see it active on the telus network

They don't care what you do with the phone if it's purchased full price.

You can buy no contract from Superstore's mobile shop

or koodo with one month pay go (costs about $30)

then cancel the paygo after a month, unlock and use on whatever network you want

We have a bunch of clients that buy q5 from koodo for $150 and then cancel the paygo after a month and unlock them
    Good deal

telus doesn't care if you unlock it. Telus will do it for $35 but when you buy it outright you only have a 1 year warranty on the phone that's it. If it's under contract telus tells me it's under warranty for the duration of your contract or You can buy a separate plan that they don't tell you about. They don't stand behind their products as much when you buy them outright.

I don't see them really standing behind the Classic much at all. Been to 3 Telus stores in the lower mainland of BC, all required you to order the Classic based on faith that nothing creaks, leaks, or wobbles. Something that has plagued past models which was solved by going through multiple boxes and sometimes phones.
Another thing to make note of, not one Telus store had a demo version of the phone which leads me to this question.
How is the build quality of the Classic?

My son brought a new classic from Telus outright and had them unlock it at the same time, which they did at no extra charge, this was in the the store in Grande Prairie Albert,
