The difference in area of a rectangle or a square when the diagonal is 5 inches is inconsequential.

The industry measures the screen on the diagonal. For practical purposes rectangular screen of 5 inches would be better than a square screen of 5 inches. I just have to look at my Nexus 7 with the keyboard showing and assume that phone would have a very minimal bezel. This square screened "phone" with a 5 inch screen would be much larger than a Z30 because of the physical keyboard.

Personally I think the upper limit of a square screened phone should be around 4 inches or maybe 4.5 max.

Personally I would rather have a 5 inch all touch phone vs the significantly larger 4.5 inch Q model.
