Sounds like the Odin refresh after all. It is supposed to have 512 mb ram, OS6 w/ webkit, 5.0 camera, and a hot spot browser according to the previous leak. What we do not know is what is going on with the processor. I really do wish it is a 1ghz processor. If it's the same processor as the Torch, I would not be as excited. It's sad that I still have no idea about the true processor of the 9550.

Ughh. But it wasn't true.. The sites that were selling it for $99 were selling it at that from the start.

yes, I heard that. news items can be deceiving. especially when written by media with a not-so-hidden-agenda.

So does this mean we're going to get an updated OS for our 9550's on September 30th? WTF....?

Sure hope the specs are right, even though I'll be one of the first in line to get it. Running out of upgrades though, might have to add another line... I just want a touchscreen BB running Blackberry 6, that's not a 9800 with crappy service.

If they only bump up the memory and processor I would be happy with that. I don't think the phone needs a major over haul. I would like to see 1gb memory and 1ghz processor. The rest of the phone could actually stay the same. The display is fine to me.

So the launch date is either gonna be Oct. or Nov.
It makes sense that the specs are gonna be better than the Torch's. Since the Torch was targeted for corporations and consumers, they put in the 624Mhz processor to save battery life. And i guess they felt corporations wouldn't care whether the resolution is 480x360 or 480 x 854.

Since Storm 3 is gonna be targeted purely to consumers, it makes sense that it would be 1Ghz, 1Gb of ram and a higher resolution. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the specs will match (and in some areas be better) than those Androids and iPhone 4.

But isn't there the outside chance that the crappy service on the 9800 is due to Blackberry 6? I hope not, because I'm thinking of upgrading to the next Storm. I tried the Storm 2 back in January but couldn't stand it and went right back to my Curve.

This won't be the device Sal leaked specs for. This will be the refresh. Which means BB6 running on the S2's 524 MHz processor.

The only way the chip will be updated is if that is required for the Wifi hotspot. Find out if the S2 chipset can do that and you'll have the answer.

This device is just to spread BB6 more. It is not the next gen storm.

    That's my $.02

What was the processor rated at for the S1?

If the S2 is 524 Mhz and the Torch is 624Mhz - then it doesn't bode well for the S3. Just 100 Mhz jump over the previous Storm isn't much of an improvement. I'm wondering what the S1 had - as that would be a good test for the improvement in BB processors over the past two years while we wait for the S3 to be released.

The Storm utilizes the MSM7600 from Qualcomm a dual core CPU with ARM11 400 MHz and ARM9 274 MHz. The device features 1GB of onboard memory, 128MB of NVRAM and an expandable memory slot support for a microSD card of up to an additional 32GB.

So I believe 400 Mhz was the speed of the original storm.

Interesting. I found a data sheet online that supports the exact specs you listed, however, I have only ever heard of the S1 as being 528 mhz. As I understood it the S1 and S2 have essentially the same chip, just that the S2 was a newer version with some added features, but not more powerful from a clockspeed or GPU perspective. Found a thread on CB where they are saying that the MSM 7600 could be clocked at 1 ghz.

Also in comparing it to the bold, please keep in mind that CDMA and GSM chipsets are different. The Bold has more MHZ, but not dedicated GPU. The MSM 7600 has a GPU and therefore has a lot of processing power. It was just underutilized in the S1. The Droid Eris ran the same chip set.

I believe with more RAM, the S1 could have supported Open GL. Heck with more Memory it could support OS6. The S1 hardware was cutting edge at the time, just needed more ram and better software.

Oh, here is the thread I referred to...

Its older and diverge into talking about Curve chips, but the first 2 pages have some good info.
