    There is some logic when it comes to the way the SoCs which are used in BlackBerrys are named.
    Disclaimer: I'm not a Telecoms engineer

    The first letters
    MTP = Reference platform
    MSM = SoC with modem
    APQ = SoC without modem

    1st number
    Probably the global architecture. In this case Krait + Adreno, but there are exceptions

    2nd number
    • 9 LTE
    • 6 CDMA
    • 2 HSPA+
    • 0 No modem

    It gets messy with the last 2 numbers
    3rd number
    Generally, it's the GPU
    • 9 Adreno 430
    • 8 Adreno 420
    • 7 Adreno 330
    • 6 Adreno 320
    • 3 Adreno 305
    • 2 Adreno 305
    • 1 Adreno 302

    but there were not enough combinations, so new SoCs use the last 2 numbers to help us understand which components they are made of..

    The last number
    Used to be the number of cores, but again, things are changing
    • 0 dual-core
    • 4 quad-core

    Extra letters at the end
    Indicate that the chip was upgraded in one way or another. Could be the CPU or the GPU.
    • MSM8960 -> MSM8960T: GPU upgrade
    • 8930 -> 8930AB: CPU upgrade
    • MSM8960T -> MSM8960DT: CPU upgrade + extra Android chips

    Let's look at the 8960AB featured in the Z30
    It has:
    • LTE modem
    • Adreno 320 GPU
    • 2 cores
    • Upgraded CPU (Krait -> Krait 300)

    And the 8974 to be featured in the Z50
    It has:
    • LTE modem
    • Adreno 330 GPU
    • 4 cores

    You can find a whole list of models on Wikipedia

    Also, these chips have Qualcomm reference numbers, such as KR28M2A30 and code names such as WaveriderSG

    Wow thanks for posting. Liked the new info, very interesting stuff. But hey, which is the Z50? Would that be the rumored "King series "?

    I've just stumbled upon some of what Qualcomm has lined-up for 2014...

    • Aragorn-Pro 8974_Pro

    • Gandalf 8084
    • Trahira FSM9900
    • Luxor 8092

    • Elessar 8994

    • Thorin 8962

    • Istari 8094

    The marketing names are missing, but looks like we'll have 2 new Adreno GPUs in quad-core config.

    Cue people moaning that BB don't jump straight to the 8994 rather than that 8974 which seems most likely for their next high-end device.

    LOL! So true... , but we don't know yet when that monster will launch... Hopefully they'll use the 8974 Pro, like other mid-range android devices which will be launched at the same time.

    Assuming they will launch a new high end model in the middle of 2014, I would bet that early hardware will be in testing soon if not by now, so too late to make a change that isn't really necessary anyway.
