I understand that nothing is set in stone and I might be wrong when I read it but I think it certainly does not bode well for us, people waiting for a future-proof 1080p device (w/ decent hardware) to make the switch:

Mallick said: "We announced last fall that for at least the next year our plan is to stay with the same resolutions on our two form factors, all touch and QWERTY touch, to give developers the confidence and consistency to leverage their investments.

"The screen resolutions are 1280 x 720 and 720 x 720 - these are the two we're focussed on for this year."

Don't forget that the Z10 screen is 768x1280.

    That's a total of 3 screen resolutions.

Nah, that's the same thing, it's just historically (HDTV) people usually use it in landscape format size.

It's not the same thing, the screens pixel numbers are different, and each screen with a different resolution has to be specifically accomodated-for by every developer that writes an app, unless s/he wants their app to not work properly on all those other screen resolutions.

That's one of the key reasons why Blackberry is keeping the different resolutions down, because if they don't, there's a very strong likelihood that a majority of the existing apps for Blackberry 10 won't run on them, severely undermining the perceived value of those other devices with other screen sizes.

That is EXACTLY what they are talking about here, in the text you quoted:

"...to give developers the confidence and consistency to leverage their investments.

Did you seriously not notice that the Z10's short-side display resolution is 768, not 720?

Guys... the devices are future-proof for when BlackBerry bumps up to 1080p displays, which will bring along 1080p apps. The Z10 is the only exception device that has the odd display of 1280x768. BlackBerry stated themselves that future devices would have the resolution 1280x720 as a standard and 720x720 for the square screens.

How this is future-proofed is by it's aspect ratio of 16:9, which falls in line with 1920x1080

I don't know. Based on what you wrote (see below), it sounded to me like you just thought that when I said the Z10 had 768x1280 resolution (rather than 1280x720), you assumed I couldn't figure out that one was long dimension first and the other was short dimension first. My point had nothing to do with orientation, it had to do with pixels. Apps frequently use bitmapped images, they have to know what the exact pixel dimensions of the device they are running on might be, or they won't display and work properly.

Since the Z10 has an odd display size and doesn't match BB's all future displays it seems like apps in the future will be limited, is this true?
