I'm looking to add WiFi to my home internet connection, and was curious to the differences between 802.11 a, b, g, n, and y?
    Are they all backwards compatible?
Does one have a larger radius that has a signal?

it all depends on your router model if it's backward compatible. you can check out more on that here Wireless Standards - 802.11b 802.11a 802.11g 802.11n - Which Is Best? .

yeah different standards cover larger radius, the newer ones especially.

Not to mention that there are extended range models for some mid age standards.

Unless you live in a 25,000 square foot fortress, you're probably fine with G or N, most wireless cards currently run G, some run N.

I concur G or N are your best bets, both are backwardly compatible with all but A (and I'm not sure what Y even is if it exsists). N is the latest and greatest, BUT I don't think it's final yet (could be wrong), tends to be more expensive, and is under utilized (mosts wifi you will find out there is either G or B). G is plenty fast, cheaper and fully backward compatible with B (and SHOULD work on N signals too but at slower speeds)
