Yeah in all honesty there are a couple phones out there which have a 3 - 8 MP for the front facing camera. it's honestly just a marketing scheme for people who are not Tech savvy and just want to brag to friends about "Mega Pixels" for their selfie Camera. Below is actually what you need.
In order to take a HD 720p Selfie on your smartphone, you only need a 1.3 MP shooter, but you can get away with having a 0.9 MP and it will do the same job.
For a Full HD 1080p Selfie on your smartphone you need a 2.7 MP Front camera, but you can get away with a 2.0 MP and it will do the same job.
Since the front facing camera usually has a smaller lens than the back camera, the "Selfies" don't look as nice. but they still have a HD resolution.
