Life was simpler before when you could just dial up your friend's home phone, agree on when and where you will meet and you just be there. In cases of emergency, you could use a pay phone. But since everybody had a mobile phone the first method didn't work much.. And people became more fussy and worried if they couldn't reach you on phone because you didn't show up on time. So it became the norm to stay in touch with phones.

I would prefer to live the first life..

But I like the internet! and I like it more when it's in my pocket!
Kinda agree. Dependability has really gone downhill, seems like the opposite of what you'd expect...

Anything is at a moment's notice now. :-(

[QUOTE=QXS;11105808]I know people have different reasons for using a phone.

What are the reasons YOU (personally) NEED a phone?

I'll put it this way, I don't think anyone NEEDS a wireless phone, but technology has advanced to a point where it's very convenient to carry one. For me, it's one device that allows me to communicate via phone calls/SMS/IM/email, consume and create various types of media, browse the web, get work done, and also play a few games. It allows for mobile productivity, be it personal or work related.

Smartphones are an efficient way to manage your communication and productivity. Back in the day I had a cell phone, a PDA for calendar and appointments, and a PC for email. Everything is now conveniently rolled into one device. Did I mention I love the HUB!

Communication, being connected, securely storing my data in a way that it's still accessible to me ...

It always makes me a bit disdainful when I hear that someone has a phone "only for emergencies." To those people I say, "Who you gonna call when you have an emergency? Someone else who has a phone 'only for emergencies?'"

Mainly email, bbm and calendar, browser, twitter and instagram.
Add in maps/ GPS when I'm driving, BlackBerry travel and Poynt when I'm traveling.
Camera and music is convenient to have.
And of course th Crackberry app.

I have a few games and apps installed that I rarely use and Netflix if I'm really stuck.

Why do I need a phone? Well, as a tool. A tool to help me in a variety of aspects of life. To stay in touch when away from home, using multiple avenues of communication, from voice and video calls, to texts, instant messaging apps, social media, and email. To keep me organized and on schedule. To accomplish goals and complete tasks & projects. To look up information and locations. Online shopping and buying and selling stuff. It's a camera and camcorder that is always in my pocket. Various banking and bill paying. Really, all sorts of stuff. I could accomplish all of these without a mobile phone, of course... but being able to do these things with my phone is a matter of convenience and effieciency. It saves time... and as they say, time is money.
