I know people have different reasons for using a phone.

What are the reasons YOU (personally) NEED a phone?

I just want to see where this thread goes. I don't have an answer myself and I won't post in this thread after this original post. Just a curious bystander.

I'll put it this way, I don't think anyone NEEDS a wireless phone, but technology has advanced to a point where it's very convenient to carry one. For me, it's one device that allows me to communicate via phone calls/SMS/IM/email, consume and create various types of media, browse the web, get work done, and also play a few games. It allows for mobile productivity, be it personal or work related.

Pretty much what a phone was intentionally made to do:
    Communicate

Music and videos are only a bonus to my reasons of having this thing.

Since I have never had a land line, the main reason would be to communicate. All the rest is a bonus, but having internet everywhere is pretty much a must when you get used to it.

So clients can reach me, and to return calls quickly, wherever I am. Can also reply to email messages promptly, all mostly work related but sometimes need to put out fires at home as well

For a long time I didn't need a cellphone and I was quite okay without one. Over time though pay phones, those were phones on poles or in a box (for you young folks out there) where you put in change and could make a call :-) , started disappearing and that is when I got my first cellphone. The need for family to get in touch when they needed me and the lack of pay phones is what did it for me.

Being deaf/hard of hearing I actually don't use the 'phone' portion of my BlackBerry devices 99% of the time (I have an app that connects to a relay service so I can read what the person on the other end of the line is saying for the 1%). I communicate via text and email and BlackBerry has always had the best platform for this.

For me, my phone has been my communication device that has allowed me to be mobil and not tied to a computer or TTY device to keep in touch. May sound weird but it gives me a sense of being part of the 'normal' everyday community. I don't know if it is a need but it has made a difference in my life.

Strange, I don't use the phone part of my phone. I need my phone to communicate, to be informed and entertained.
My brother is one of those individuals that has recently decided to live without a mobile device. Works for him, don't think it will work for me.

Life was simpler before when you could just dial up your friend's home phone, agree on when and where you will meet and you just be there. In cases of emergency, you could use a pay phone. But since everybody had a mobile phone the first method didn't work much.. And people became more fussy and worried if they couldn't reach you on phone because you didn't show up on time. So it became the norm to stay in touch with phones.

I would prefer to live the first life..

But I like the internet! and I like it more when it's in my pocket!

I need my phone primarily for the following:
    1. To speak with family, locally and overseas.
    2. For personal and work email.
    3. To quickly communicate with contacts via text or BBM.
    4. As a GPS-enabled mapping and navigation device.
    5. To browse the Internet for news, mostly.
    6. To access my social networks.
    7. To securely store my passwords.
    8. As a camera.

    I get lost easily ^^

    Seriously:
*Work - ph calls, emails, texts, travel, expenditure etc. (trying to get colleagues on to BBM)
*Navigation (work/personal) [I do get lost]
*Emergency - my ph always comes on mtb rides with me (JIC)
    *Video/photo - family and friends
*How to's... any/everything I'm not sure of [interwebs]
*Research - particularly re, mountain bikes
    *Reminders/To Do's
    *Spirit level
*Music Player (300+ songs and counting)
    *File sharing
    (plus others...)

w/o my trusty smart ph I'd be lost (literally & figuratively speaking)

I don't need one personally. I actually hate others being able to track me down instantly. I never pull it out in public and generally only use it to communicate with my assistant who does all my scutt work.
