I may be weird (I've always been told my head is in the clouds) but the New Horizons space probe and it's journey is so cool to me!

3 billion miles away and a 9 year flight! It's at the end of our solar system! That's so huge it takes a second to get around the numbers. Where were you then? I didn't have seven of my nine cousins back then.

As you can see I am a bit of a space exploration junkie but it crucial to our understanding and appreciation of our own earth and it's uniqueness. We get so caught up in our own little universe of TV shows, politics, social media we forget how alone vulnerable and precious our little marble is.

I have this pet theory that if visited by aliens all of a sudden all the things we old dear and true and the silly ideas we aspire to and use to separate us from each other would become trivial and a new appreciation for life would develop despite our evolutionary underpinnings. Maybe the world might be better off. Sadly, I think the only reason we haven't been visited by aliens is they've already had a glimpse of what's here and decided to bypass us.

Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox and ask if anyone is as excited as I am and waiting with the same anticipation for what information New Horizons will bring.

Yes, I know the title should be "who is.....". : )

    I'm still excited!

The Principal Investigator for New Horizons made sure to put some of Pluto's discoverer's ashes on the spacecraft. I thought that was so cool.

I have the picture of Pluto, Charon and Earth as my wallpaper.

New Horizons had collected a years worth of data by last Tuesday night when it checked in at Mission Operations. It will take 4-1/2 hours to beam the data back.

OP - if you like space and theories we're going to get along! You ever heard about the zoo theory or the isolation theory? Quite interesting theories about why we have not made contact.
Regarding Pluto...I've been amazed by what has happened. What blows me out of the water is the amount of math and physics involved to ensure, nearly a decade ago, and all the variables involved, they were able to get to this far, and close, to Pluto. Absolutely amazing.

They laugh at me because I'm different; I laugh at them because they're all the same. 

Just thinking about the radio tx/rx for commands, flight, telemetry, meteor & Spacejunk avoidance for its journey.... we can beam a terrabyte of data 9bn miles on ten year+ old developed technology ***mind blown***

    Yes!!!!! The technology is mindblowing!

The Hubble Space Telescope's Near Field Camera was replaced. The old one had all these dents that were from tiny spacejunk. The macro spacejunk is mapped so the satellite can avoid its path. Mapped 9 billion miles away!

The dents are drilled out of the camera for research. If I can find the pic, I'll post it.
