What's with all the 90 year old Brits on CB using "whilst" recently? This word is so redundant it just needs to be removed from the dictionary and added to the CB "blocked words filter"....

I'm as British as the next guy but I stick to words that are in common usage AFTER 1900... "Whilst" is so out of date even scrabble wouldn't accept it...

Whilst is a nice suggestion, it still a open forum for anyone to use whatever era of language it comes from. You don't happen to be a teacher r u?

I know, I'm just having a gripe. The word just rubs me the wrong way for some reason. The dictionary is safe from my censorship efforts.

WHy would it matter if he is a teacher?
Whilst is a old, out of style word and I think people use it here to remind us they are Bristish. Like it matters.

Language is never out of style. It's when and how you use it. Not that I have any discipline when it comes to writing.

Haha I'm guilty of having used it. And I'm not even British. Lol. I think why we've seen an increase in usage of the word is that, at least for me, my z10 suggests the crap out of it all the time!

Though the word "whilst" may be a tad outdated, I have no complaints. I would prefer to see a quaint word used where grammatically correct, than some of the astonishingly poor grammar in many posts.
(I'm not complaining about posts written by members for whom English is obviously not a first language.)

I'm more interested in what the deal was with the gal who used "ma" whenever she meant "my" and seemed to use it for every sentence.

That is like saying Shakespeare is out of style because no one speaks English that way anymore. There is a charm in some of the old words, whether you are British or not. Of course, I may be a bit biased because I have a degree in English. LOL!
