Hey everyone, so as the title describes I'm quite interested to know what screen size you think is the most "optimal" for use. (one handed or with both) The reason I'm starting this thread is because over the last couple years Smartphones have been getting bigger and the tablets have been getting smaller so some things are now called "Phablets"

Ill start, If a smartphone has a keyboard i think the max screen size for optimal use would be around 3'5 inches simply because your thumb won't reach any higher than that. If it is a full touch device i think around 4.3' inches is optimal and i wouldn't want to go any bigger than that.

So what do you guys think?

Well I used to use a BB10 device and I loved how it would fit in my hand since I have small hands. 4'2 inch is perfect for me. BUT now that I am using an S4 sometimes my hands cramp up because of the landscape keyboard. It can be a pain to reach my finger up to the power button. I'm adjusting. I think anything higher than 5 inches is too large for me.

I like a 5 to 5.5 screen even if I need to use two hands. I'm using a Z30 right now and can use it one handed. I'm not really all that interested in something that I can't fit in my pocket. That's where the size of the phone matters to me, not how I type on it.

I'm good 1-handed with my Z30, though I have to stretch to reach the "Q". I'm seriously considering the Passport. I imagine that will take 2 hands, but it'll be a small sacrifice for the better screen size. (I access a lot of architectural drawings, and the bigger 1:1 will suit me better.)

Very interesting, thanks for the comments guys. also makes me wonder when phone sizes will plateau. Because you have devices like the BlackBerry Q10 which have a 3'1 inch screen and then you have a Samsung Galaxy Mega with a 6'4 inch so there is such a wide range haha.

I used to use a 3.8 inch screen and now use a 5 inch BlackBerry Z3. I have small hands but find the 5 inch very good for typing and viewing content.

5 to 5.5 and that about it for me. Anything else I would recommend use a tablet or my PC.

You have to use a bluetooth for calls with that! I use my LG Tone a lot, but don't want to use it all the time.

4.5-5.5" on a touchscreen device. I never type using landscape mode. I always use portrait mode.

I actually find the recent 50in screen phones are very comfortable to use. You just need to use all hands and feet to control. #SamsungLife

4.7/4.8 inch is the optimal size. It's perfect. Not too much of both worlds

Actually really surprised at the comments I'm reading here. Never thought most people would want a device that has a 5 inch screen.

I'm sure it's really nice for seeing a lot of text on the screen and watching videos. But to me. It just feels to big when it's in my pocket. especially for the ladies who wear tight jeans.

At first, 5 inch will seem enormous. Until you actually get one and get used to it. Then you will see other smaller screen phones as toys.

Somewhere between 4.5" - 5" for me. Though I find that another important consideration is the actual design of the device itself ie. The size of the bezels and overall shape can make a big difference on the handling , useabiliy and pocketabikity of the phone.

    Well said,

I was in the Vodacom shop (African ISP) the other day and I put the Z30 and Z10 next to each other. Even though the Z30 is 0.8 inches bigger it doesn't seem that way simply because of the design and how thin the bezel is

Still prefer my Q5, for me a small compact phone is great

That's not too big for me, but I wear regular fit jeans: nothing extremely tight or loose.

I want the biggest screen with the smallest bezels that I can use single-handedly. Regarding physical size, the Z30 is near my size limit, causing hand shuffling to reach some screen areas. If UI improvements overcome this challenge (like the iPhone 6+ approach or the Galaxy Note approach) then I'd be willing to try something bigger, so long as it fits easily in pocket.

I didn't think I would feel this way until I moved up from the Z10 to the Z30 and now the larger screen is a lot more important to me than I thought it'd be.

6 inches.. Dont think I can go back after 6 months with 1520 nokia to a smaller device. Yeah I know its huge but once you get used to the big screen there is no going back

Have to disagree, unfortunately I think the 3.1" - 3.7' inch screen is the golden area for qwerty devices. Makes them easy to fit into a purse, pocket also really nice when you are keeping it with a wallet since they are similar size.

I think once you go over 4'5 inches the phone starts becoming a small tablet. Becomes awkward when put in a pocket because of the size. Just my opinion obviously

The phone's total size is what's important to me. The Z10 is a perfectly sized phone. I do think the screen can be maximized without changing the form factor, by paying attention to the bezel size. The S5 is too big and bulky looking, IMHO.
