As George Carlin once said, a bunch of guys ice skating, playing with a puck, and occasionally beating the **** out of each other. From time to time the ref appears to get upset about the details of how someone has beaten on someone else and puts that player in jail temporarily.

Can someone explain this game in more detail? Are there strategies like football (blitz, prevent defense, zone, man, spy, 4-3, 3-4, 3-3-5, routes) and penalties (holding, false start, offsides, clipping, etc)?

Hockey has so much strategy it's mind boggling. It is so fast paced it is sometimes hard to see. No I can't explain it. Just watch it.
And cheer for the Canucks of course.

    Rugby: Tackle soccer

Soccer: Stickless hockey played in cleats with a ball instead of a puck.

So you can see the importance of me understanding hockey.

Twenty-two men kick a ball for ninety minutes, then the Germans win?

It's like soccer where you shoot to score on the other team's net. Generally 3 forwards acting as left wing, right wing and center; 2 defencemen and a goalie per team. Puck must travel past the other team's blue line prior to any player on the offensive team or it's offside. Using your stick on a player is a penalty, tripping, illegal obstructions like that is that is a 2 minute penalty and player must sit in the box. Team plays with one less player during the two minutes. 20 minute periods. 3 periods per game. There is a five minute overtime to settle tie games. Previous years it was one less player per team on the ice for the whole five minutes. This year might be 2 less players. If overtime is done and still a tie, goes to a shootout for winner. In playoffs though, overtime is full 20 minutes, same # of players on ice. First goal wins, no shootout in playoffs.

That's the basics. Like any sport, always lots more detail.
