A walk into the abyss...
So, I was bored on Friday night, so I went to the mall. I ended up going into the Apple Store just to watch all the mindless sheeple "ooh" and "ahh" over the crap they've got on display there. Now, I'm not going to lie, I like bright lights and pretty colors, too (Hey, I've owned an iPhone -for two seconds- and I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a Mac Pro... just saying).
Anyway, while walking around the stable, I happened upon an iPhone that had a fishing app on it. I'm no fisherman and I don't play one on T.V. but I was curious. I know Apple has tons of apps and games for the iPhone/iPod/Touch/etc... which does make it a "fun" toy, if not terribly useful. I started playing the fishing game (I don't really remember the name, but it doesn't really matter) and I was "hooked". I thought to myself, "Damn, this game pretty much rocks." You can pick your fishing location, your bait (Ragworms, regular worms, lures, squid, etc...) I started out trying to catch catfish and helpless fish like that but after about 2 minutes, I set my sights on the elusive Swordfish... That mother f'er needed to feel the wrath of my reel.
Poseidon unleashed his fury on that night. It was cold and harsh on the sea. The boat was helpless against the massively unforgiving power of the ocean waves, which looked like skyscrapers, reaching to the heavens. I was soaked to the bone from the relentless downpour. I figured I was in for a long night. I had a few nibbles from the hapless bonita, caught a decent sized yellowfin tuna, but the swordfish was seemingly out of my grasp.
I pondered calling it an early night and heading the boat in to dock. Just as I finished the thought, my line tightened, the rod stiffened (literally) and the reel began squealing. YES! I had hooked the great fish! I was unsure if I had really hooked the beast, until I saw it fly into the air, helplessly snagged by my hook. My vision blurry from the sweat off my brow mixed with the rain and saltwater from the splashing against the side of the boat. I couldn't be sure how long I was battling the fish, as time seemed to disappear. (Turned out it was about 2 minutes, but I was too caught up in the epic battle to look at my watch...) The titanic match between man and beast finally ended when I landed the swordfish. I saw the pained look in the devil's eye. It had struggled to preserve life, fighting against every push and pull I had thrown at the worthy adversary.
I couldn't bring myself to keep such a magnificent specimen, I mean... How could I now eat it? I couldn't... So, after a long meaningful last look into the eyes of the beast, I took my knife, slowly cut the line that tethered the fish to the boat and watched it swim away into the dark abyss.
And with that, I headed back for home.
Well played, sir. Well played.
