Is there anyway that you can use a phone as a modem for a laptop? My brother is looking for a phone that can do this. He wants to be able to plug his laptop in and use the phone as a modem so he can do his business off of it (get electronic signatures, etc).

He says other people in his profession have this but I'm not sure what's involved in this. If anyone has an answer I would sure appreciate it.

    Try a BlackBerry.
Which Blackberry? To the best of my knowledge this can't be done with a Storm. Can someone give me details?

You mean a dumb cell phone, or a landline? Many cell phones can do it, but it's not always easy, and generally requires a usb cable and special drivers. What cell phone and carrier does he have?

Sure it can be done with a Storm, or any BB, it just needs a tethering plan.

He's looking at Verizon and he's interested in the Droid or a Blackberry.

Verizon is terrible for tethering. T-Mobile and I think AT&T have unlimited tethering as part of their unlimited Blackberry plans. If he goes the Blackberry route, have him look at Tether for tethering.

Tether BlackBerry | BlackBerry Modem | Tether

Sprint doesn't let you tether, and AT&T limits your tethering with your plan I think. As far as I know, TMo is the only carrier that offers decent tethering.
Or you can get a third party app like Tether, tetherbridge, FixmoTether, or PDAnet.
In general it seems like android has more tethering options, but BB has plenty.
