From all the weather reports I'm seeing, anywhere from 3 to 12 inches of snow, depending on who you read/listen to, followed by high winds and "significant drifting." Combine that with the Illinois Department of Transportation, and you have a recipe for disaster.

I laid in supplies in case I have to take it easy as the weather moves in. Worst storm I was in was in 93, got laid over for 4 days in Grand Island, Nebraska for 4 days. Couldn't move with the closed roads.

It's Cold but So What?

It's cold but so what? So WHAT? Well, we''ll answer the "what", the "when" and the "why".

From a meteorological perspective this current arctic invasion is not incredibly remarkable.

That may be surprising to some but the fact is there have been several colder outbreaks than this one.

But you're probably saying right now - WHO CARES, IT'S COLD! You're right, it is downright cold and it's nothing to just dismiss. Let's examine the significance of this cold...

What's happening?: An arctic air mass outbreak consuming the eastern two-thirds of the U.S.

When: Already in progress but the second surge of even more intense cold is invading the country. The arctic chill will begin to loosen its grip by early next week.

Is there historical significance?: This arctic outbreak may not surpass or even measure up to previous cold invasions. In fact, there probably will not be many record lows broken during this cold snap.

Then why is this cold spell important? Although the magnitude of the cold will be short of reaching record territory, it will certainly be remembered for its duration. In the South, a cold spell usually strikes then is a quickly fleeting memory in no time. That won't be the case this time.

Give us some examples! Alrighty then...

Chicago
Hasn't been above freezing since Christmas Day, (11 straight days).
Average high this time of year is 30 degrees.
Chicago could approach freezing early next week.
Finally reached the 20s on Tuesday for the first time this month (and year).

Cleveland
10 straight days with at least a trace of snow.
Possible this streak could go right into the weekend.

Buffalo
11 of last 12 days with snow
17 of last 19 days with a trace or more of snow
Similar to Cleveland, the city has at least a chance of snow through Saturday.

Atlanta
12 straight days colder than average
High temperatures have not reached out of the 30s since Saturday, (4 straight days).
If high temps don't reach the 40s on Wednesday or Thursday, Atlanta may remain stuck in the 30s until early next week.

Orlando
Lows in the 30s each morning since Saturday, (5 straight days)
The city may have to wait until early next week to see lows warmer than the 30s. That would be a streak of at least 9 days.

Miami
Lows in the 40s or colder each morning since Saturday, (5 straight days)
Per NWS, the longest streak of sub-50 degree low temps in Miami: 13 DAYS (Jan - Feb 1940)
The last time they had at least 6 straight sub-50 degree days: Jan 2001
