Yeah, and the ship I was on was almost the same age I was at the time. The AC system was pretty old. You get 63 men in one space, warm it up and add high humidity, fuel oiln lube oil, fresh paint, and solvents, it would get gamey fast. Plus, the effects of MSG in the chow had terrible consequences. It was kinda like a sheet of licorice , you could almost cut chunks out of the air and chew them like gum. Some of us would sleep in the flight deck safety nets. Only cool place at night.

Hey BK, I was on the John C Stennis in San Diego, courtesy of a hometown girlfriend's husband. I got a tour of the ship and ate lunch in the officers mess. Quite the experience. I liked up on the flight deck too, the quarters were pretty cramped. It would be tough to do as a youngster, I'm sure

I started boot camp as a 17 y/o 2 months to the day after I graduated from HS. I had my 18th in basic training, after having my 17th sitting in the MEPS building in downtown Dallas. I was trained and served just shy of 8 years in San Diego. The Stennis is positively stately in comparison.

Back when I served, they didn't allow the nuclear carriers to be based at North Island. We had the Constellation, Kitty Hawk, and the Ranger. My ships were USS Merrill and Fox. Both are gone now.
