b/c i downloaded the BBM 5.0 through my blackberry and it worked great, i dont use DM for anything anymore except backups

Brad if you want to do OTA, go to the Blackberry Discussion forum and the sticky thread for BBM 5.0. They have a list of numerous OTA links.

Just backup your phone first! A lot of people had problems with the OTA downloads getting halfway done and then failing.

Register the HRT (Options > Advanced Options > Host Routing Table > Menu > Register Now), pull the battery for 60 seconds, then resend service books.

Yep. Its still fine to do. It doesn't make a difference. I have T-Mobile's official release for my phone and I still deleted the vendor file before install.
