It hit me really weird too. It's like all that is good in my life suddenly just flew away like a flock of scared birds or something. My worst fears seemed to become a reality and from that point on, the day became extremely gloomy (plus the thunder/lightning storm didnt help). It seemed like I couldn't say, or do anything right...and everything was eery and quiet (except for the thunder).

I'm glad that day is over! I kinda look at it like this now:

A 4 year doesn't have the sense of reason that a 33 year does. Therefore, it's easy for a 4 year old to become confused about certain aspects of life. Later that night (around bed time), I very gently explained to my son that my ex's boyfriend (free ride) is a nice guy and that its ok to like him and/or look up to him, but he wasn't his dad and that I was and always will be his dad. He seemed to understand and he hugged me for like 10 minutes after that.

That brought me back from the gloom.

Aww Jason I'm sorry. That's such a confusing thing for so many kids. My daughter did the same thing at that age & my boyfriend was able to explain things to her before her father ever heard about it. Sounds like you handled it pretty well.
