I recommend a mitsubishi evolution X if you want a very sporty car yet you need family space. Even if you don't have a family a evolution x is a very nice car especially if you like power. All come with turbo and all wheel drive.

If evos are not your taste try a turbo subaru impreza, they are also sedan style yet offer very good performance..

I don't buy new cars. I love to build them. With 35,000 you could build a very powerful car that won't lose value. For intance, 1993 mazsda rx7 still run 15,000 to 20,000 today as so do supras, 3000gt vr4, etc...

    Other cars I recommend are

    Eclipse gst
    Eclipse gsx
    Acura nsx

With simple little add ons like boost controller, front mount, intake, headers, downpipe, exhuast that evo would be a monster. Light car+awd+turbo=heaven.... Later comes bigger turno, injectors, fuel pump, regulator, methanol system, cams. Pistons etc to make 700+hp

I personally do not like Japan made cars. Honda/Acura/Toyota/Lexus/nissan.... they are all over priced..

the only car that i would recommend in the japan based market is as stated the Evo 10. or the Suby WRX..

if you want the best bang for your buck is a Audi, the A3 wagon will give the most amout of room, and the 2.0 Turbo engine is really peppy.

    I recommend imports... especially German.

You can get a pretty nice used Mercedes for under $35,000. My mom has a 2005 Merc c230 (or 320, I can't remember) Kompressor with a supercharger. It's a very nice car.

My dad has 2 Porsche 944's, 1983 and 1985. One still drives like it's brand new (the street car) but the other is a race car.

For $35,000 I would get the fully loaded 2010 Toyota Prius, the version that has the most advanced electronic gadget. If you are BB fan, you got love gadget.

Hmm, love my bug!! It's the second car that I ever had. It's small, so not typically good for family room. The first car that I had was a Honda Accord and absolutely loved it. Great gas mileage, was able to take on the high miles. Wonderful Car!!

but that is a hybrid... are hybrids leave a bigger carbon footprint than a 198x's Chevrolet Pick up

the proccess of making the Hybrid's special plastics, the battiers, the meters, the storage for the battiers do more damage that driving a big block GM truck for 10 years.

and my 1982 Volkswagen Diesel Rabbit gets 57mpg on the high way.

and it cost me way less that 35,000$

+1 on the VW diesels. The current TDI engines are awesome and come in several models, including some Audis nows.

Rumor has it that VW & Audi will offer a diesel engine in every car/suv they offer by 2012.

Never spend 35k on a hyundai. That said, I wouldn't rule out the newer chevy and ford models. For 35k and less you can get really decked out awd fusion. Or take a look at the impalas or malibou. Other then that, 2009 acura TL's are pretty nice too.

Go with the Lexus ES 350. I have a 350 and a 15 y/o ES 300. They are the most
reliable cars I have ever owned. Outside of routine maintenance they both have
    been completely trouble free.

The ES 300 has over 250.000 miles on it and it looks good, rides smooth and
    is mechanically very sound.

The 350 is an absolute pleasure to drive. Well designed and equally well appointed.

4 door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Fun to drive, plenty of space, and will hold it's value like nobody's business. But if you don't need the space, the 2 door is a bit more fun, as it weighs less....

But I agree, you failed to mention what you were looking for in a vehicle...
