Tom petty & the heartbreakers greatest hits and the eagles greatest hits are two of the best "road" albums ever. But I'll also make another shameless suggestion for motion city soundtrack. And if you're looking to just chill with some background music check out the postal service.

I HATE driving in texas. Driving for 15 hours, from el paso to texarkana, and never leaving the state you started in is horrible. Other than that I loved living there.
For music: Metallica

look up Rebelution, the Expendables, Pepper, Slightly Stoopid, Can't Hang and Passafire for the best reggae/rock that you will ever be exposed to. if you want ill just make you a playlist of the best songs and PM them to you. have fun in Texas, i love it here.
Which way are you routing thru Texas? Some routes are a lot easier to drive than others. I'll never forget the trip from Dallas to Sanderson and back to pick up a pickup for a customer, back when the backroads had 55 mph limit. 18 hours of sheer driving FUN.
