I'm always open to suggestions on literature to check out.... I thought rather than asking the same old people this post might help me get a broader response.
Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger - FANTASTIC
I Know This Much is True - Wally Lamb (newer, but will be a classic someday!! [HIS OTHER BOOKS ROCK TOO!!])
Anything by William Trevor. Simply one of the best short story
writers of all time. Cheating at Canasta, A Bit On the Side and
My House In Umbria (not a short)
Vanilla Bright Like Eminem (short stories) - Michael Faber
Phillip Roth, Joseph Heller, Eugene O'Neill and T.S. Eliot
The bell jar by sylvia plath, the things they carried by tim obrien, the world according to garp by john irving, bright lights big city (the author escapes me,) anything by irvine welsh, etc.

Jenay, that is an amazing book. I've reread that one more times than I
can count.

I heard are you there vodka, it's me chelsea is an amazing book I am definitely considering that as my next!!
I wouldn't recommend the whole Stephen King library (well, I do, but I'll narrow it down a little), but the Dark Tower books are amazing. I need to make time to continue, but I may re-read #4 before I move on to 5, 6, and 7.
Also, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a great trilogy at 5 books.
Denis Leary has a new book coming out, I read an excerpt in Playboy, very good. Also, I've only read "Brain Droppings," but I'd recommend anything by George Carlin.

I read as much as it is for work; to the point where it has unfortunately compelled me to think twice to read for leisure now. Personally; I am drawn to non-fiction/biographical/historical framework literature. However when I did read more often for the pure fun of it...here are some of my favorites:
The Autobiography of Malcolm X The Center Cannot Hold A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier The Nine: Inside The Secret World of the Supreme Court Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid Confessions of an Economic Hitman Lolita

Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand
The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell
+1 on Atlas Shrugged.
One of my favorites is Rich Man Poor Man by Irwin Shaw. It's tough to find since I believe it's been out of print for quite awhile but it's easy enough if you hit ebay.
I also really enjoy anything by James A. Michener and if you enjoy history and have time for 1000+ pages check him out. Tons more but I'm at work and don't have time to make a list lol.
It really is. The funny thing is, it was required reading for poetry and semantics in high school, and I still read that same copy to this day, nearly ten years later.
I also recommend the scarlet ibis - one of the saddest books I have ever read.
