Yes, it's that time of year for watching some epic multiple overtime games and coming to work the next morning all tired and bleary-eyed, and yelling and cheering at the TV so loudly that my neighbors think I'm mentally disturbed. Anyhow the matchups are set (awesome game between NYR and PHI today, BTW) and I'd like to see everyone's picks for the first round.

Here are the matchups, along with my picks:

    Eastern Conference:
    Habs vs Caps--Caps in 5
    Flyers vs Devils--Devils in 7
    Bruins vs Sabres--Sabres in 5
    Senators vs Penguins--Pens in 5

    Western Conference:
    Avs vs Sharks--Sharks sweep
    Predators vs Blackhawks--Hawks in 5
    Kings vs Canucks--Canucks in 5
Red Wings vs Coyotes--Wings in 5

I have to be honest here......It has been tough for me to be excited about hockey at all since the Whalers left Hartford. I grew up on the Whale, and though they will always be known to many as the Forever .500's, they were my team.

So living in MA now, I just can't make myself root for the Bruins. Sure, it's nice to see them win, but I can't actively root for them.

In fact, I probably miss the days of the WHA more.

A few of my favorite (or notable) moments in Whale history:

    - Stash Bash Dash line of Blaine Stoughton, Pat Boutette, and Mike Rogers
    - 13-0 Double Chilli (thanks to Wendy's) win over the Gretzky-less Oilers
    - Civic Center roof collapsing in 1978 within nobody inside....a miracle
    - Getting to see the likes of Howe, Hull, Keon, McKenzie all play on Home ice
    - Road tripping freshmen year in college (Colgate) to see a season opener in Buffalo
    - Having a Slapshot alum on the team (Jack Carlson)
    - Nick Fotiu
    - Brass Bonanza
    - Neumy
    - Flip side of the Brass Bonanza '45 (if you need to ask, you never were a Whalers fan)
    - etc......

Yes, it is very sad that none of these moments included a Stanley Cup (but I do have a Hurricanes Cup winning ber stein.)

And to all Bruins fans out there, I apologize for Ulf Samuelsson. Even though he was on the hated Bruins, Cam Neely was always one of my favorite players to watch and I feel shamed by Ulf's style of play......

They only lasted one season, but I remember the Philly Blazers in the WHA, and went to a game (I THINK, I was a young child). They moved Victoria, BC and lasted a few more seasons before folding shortly before the WHA folded in to the NHL.

Although I'm not a fan, don't sleep on the Kings. They're young and out to prove something.

Man that's going way back. I still remember all the agita that caused. And that
roof collapse at the Civic Center was a pure stroke of luck.

The two sports I don't get are hockey and NASCAR (why is that popular or
    considered a sport)

Gotta be the crashes. And that applies to BOTH sports.

I told you not to slip on the Kings! Excellent showing last night at the Staples Center.

    Caps, finally looking crisp again.

Buffalo lost the series last night.

These aren't the Wings of last year. Still the Coyotes are that good.

The Sharks have the ability to beat ANY TEAM... except themselves.

Bump for the Flyers forcing game 7 and being on the verge of history and being possibly the the first hockey team since the 1975 New York Islanders to come back from a 3 to 0 series deficit!

I am still sore from the B's loss... but am sitting at a bar in downtown Philly watching all the nutty Flyers fans - and have to root for them to take out the Habs.

Yeah, I'm still trying to shake off that Bruins collapse (banging head against kitchen counter)

Habs done - on to the Hawks. I don't see them losing the Cup. They are hot with a hotter goalie.

NHL Network has the regular season Flyers/Hawks game on tonight, and it's still fairly early on, 10 minutes left in the 1st. (Must have started at 8pm) IF anyone is interested. No score yet.
