Just looking to see if any of you clever folks have any views or opinions on Scotland possibly becoming independent.

Not Scottish and never been there (hence not much of an opinion), but I'm still eagerly awaiting the results.

The polls in Scotland will close at 22h00 GMT ( their time). So it will be 18h00 (GMT-4) here in Montreal when the Scottish polls close.

i suppose it will be middle of the night is not tomorrow. Poll is too close to call. I'm sure they are counting every single one carefully.

I think the success of separation might reverberate into other countries. Non the least to Canada. I'm sure the separatist Quebecois will be following closely.

Yeah, but Quebec has tried (twice) and failed. Although I have a feeling this referendum won't be as much of a nailbiter as Quebec 1995.

First results due in an hour and a half.
Too close to call in the polls but turnout reported to be 85+% which is impressive as 97% of population registered to vote.

I think it will be close call... I personally hope for Scotland to remain part of the Union. However I am a firm believer of the democratic vote... so lets see how things pan out tomorrow.

It will be massive changes either way.

Never been to Scotland, but got close (Newcastle on the Tyne and Lindisfarne). But I know quite a few folks from Scotland. It will be interesting either way, but if they do vote to separate, also interesting to see who may try next.

It'll be close but I feel it will be a slight edge on NO vote as I have a feeling that the financial savvy people will want to protect their financial interests and also have a financial buffer in the UK and also as a part of Europe.
It will be extremely close and if it is a YES vote when the dust settles then good on Scotland but it'll be a tough road either way.

If YES = The building of Independence begins
If NO = The stigma is attached that they tried but failed and there will probably not be another referendum again and it'll be a little bit of the tail between the legs syndrome for a while.

    Just my honest opinion.

So is the "Yes" actually serious about full independence or they just trying to force a compromise?

(I know very little about this, I'm just a curious onlooker)

It'll give them a full breakaway independence and the United Kingdom that has stood for 300 odd years will come to an end. That's why the Queen is watching it with her buttocks clenched.

I think when it comes down to this close. Fear would win over. I would too give the edge to the No side.

I think, as romantic as the idea of an "independent" Scotland must be, what's the practical purpose at this point in time? It only creates financial and military headaches. All of UK's nukes are housed at a base in Scotland. Will they keep using the pound, switch to Euro or trade entirely in units of Scotch Whiskey?

They reportedly account for 5% of UK's GDP and also make up about 5% of UK's population, so... it's not like they're a gold mine being exploited by the UK.

It's not like they will gain independence by proudly beating the crap out of England,.. so what will they gain in pride that they don't already have in their culture and history?

Guess the party's over. Not exactly a 50.6%/49.4% split.

Perhaps he put all his eggs on this election and no longer has the desire or the energy to carry on.

Maybe. Always some doubt about his motives given he's had more comebacks than Sinatra. And he's hardly old.

Pretty big blow for the SNP going forward though, he's a brilliant politician.
