hey i dont know what kind of responce ill get from this but i was wondering if any of you guys have radar detectors that work well enough for every day use? i wana get one but i dont know what i need or should look for. will the cheap ones detect radar just as good as the expencive ones?

Valentine 1 is the best, nothing comes close. I have 4 of them, one in each car. I just can't imagine owning a high performance car and not have a V1 to save my ****.

I bought a Cobra once and was getting false Laser alerts in my driveway! The closest other car was a 1/4 mile down the road and no it wasnt a cop. So I took it back and exchanged it. The second did the same thing. Whistler only picks up cops as they are walking up to your window, ticket in hand.
They're only illegal in a handfull of states. Virginia and DC I know of the top of my head. The cops there use detector detectors cause that's a higher fine than speeding. Some of the higher end detectors have invisibility modes to block the detector detectors. But I wouldn't chance it. I've seen Virginia State Police take great pride smashing a freinds $400 detector on the road on top of a $250 fine for having it and $150 ticket for speeding.

I had a K40 hard wired into a car. It was a great radar detector and laser defuser. They were actually so sure of their product that they guaranteed you wouldn't get a ticket. They were actually willing to pay the ticket if you got one while using their product.
The province of British Columbia made it illegal to have a radar detector as well. Damn "Mount-Me" made me give it to him on top of the $150 ticket he gave me. I still havent paid that one and don't plan on it. They got my $150 when they took my detector.

Yes, and like wildC says they can and WILL confiscate them if illegal in that state. My friend I told you of, wanted to sue for it. Destruction of Private property and all. An attorney said that would be like suing the DEA for destroying the illegal drugs they confiscated from you.

ouch. well i needed one soon cause we are going on a road trip soon and i wanteed to not have a repeat of last time. i did what you all said not to do. i got a cobra, it was all i could afford. it seems to have been working well all day although 2 cops drove by me and my detector did nothing. it seems to work 50% of the time. i will probably return it with in the 30 days, and just wait till i can afford a better one. can cops turn their radar off? like off duty cops? the two that passed me were out of their county and couldnt have really done anything anyway.... hmm i duno
