Envied; teachers need a much stronger and effective lobby in D.C. I agree with you that we can't reign in more of the public into becoming educators; unless the respect, prestige, status, money and rank is there.

For example; why does society see doctors and lawyers the way they do...it's mainly because of those qualities mentioned above.

As for the debate and the qualities of each candidiate in general, McCain has a serious disconnect with the new generation; and the workings of how the new world operates. He has such obvious disdain for Obama; sure he may not feel Obama is the better of the two to be our next President..but at least Obama provides much more clarity with his responses to the economy, healthcare, national/foreign security, and education w/o the cheap shots and multitude of angry faces. McCain comes across as a very bitter man (quite possibly really is); pounding points to try to undermine the real issues affecting the majority of people.

Of many responses to questions that were asked of McCain; he provided VERY vague and off-point answers. One example is how he responded to the question along the lines of how each candidate feels his running mate would be a competent President if (God forbid) something were to happen to either one on the top of the ticket. McCain gave points on Palin that were moot to the Presidency.

I think Obama came across as mundane in the first half hour of the debate; because In his head he was playing out the anticipation of ridiculous points McCain was bound to bring up in the debate...the same points that have been baseless'ly pounded on because the real issues dealing with substance; McCain/Palin don't offer reassurance for.

As for vinnie; well buddy...I missed you just as you probably oh-so-very-much-so missed me. I don't even understand why some mention you and I in the same breathe. Is it just because you and I became temporarily banned for a stint of time; around the same time? Our reasons for getting a time out were different. I wish I was provided clear instances as to why I was exactly temporarily suspended. Because if I recall some of what those instances were; then surely other participants should have been dealt the same fate. However, I digress. Vinnie; it's one thing to stir the pot...but to try to entertain via conscious malice? Apples and oranges.

    I completely agree with you!!!

One of the reasons is this-----every parent has gone to school at some point in their life therefore they believe they know what goes on in a classroom. Add the fact that their taxes pay our salary, that gives them the right as know it alls.

As I said in an earlier post, he seemed both angry and cocky at the same time. I asked my husband as we watched the debate, has he responded one time without saying something dirty and negative about Obama (not just questioning his policies---it was way beyond that). He talks in circles and tried to deflect attention from that fact!

Of many responses to questions that were asked of McCain; he provided VERY vague and off-point answers. I think it is difficult for Obama to respond to him because he does not make most of the time. I was once told, when you argue with a fool, you become foolish. I think this applies to their debate somewhat.

HIGHDEF----read your quoted part my responses to you are embedded in there. I thought I was changing the font style and color but it did not work.

I know you did not address the last part to me but that has never stopped me before so why now. I don't think there are any similarites to you and vinnie. I may not agree with everything you understand however your comments are thought provoking and lead to an honest and open exchange of thoughts and ideas. Vinnie seems to like to stir the pot for no other reason than to stir the pot. He is often speaking on issues he knows nothing about and hides when confronted with such. Just my two cents!

Vinnie- how did you make it through the marines? Just the idea of you with a weapon frightens me, and not in a good way. There's a reason why teachers have to go through so much school. What does the military teach about kids? what does knowing how to down a target at 300m or how to clear a room or how to navigate at night or how to run 9 miles have to do with kids?
The idea that any soldier, marine, etc is "automatically qualified" to teach is incredibly mundane and just downright dumb. The fact that the military offers to put all of it's members through college is good enough- if they really want them to maybe they could offer a job placement program for ex-military members who complete the required secondary education to become a teacher.

If the nfl only paid 45k/year a lot less people would gun to be nfl players, its a simple concept really. The more people that can do the job, the less the pay is. Almost anyone can go through basic and be infantry, not everyone can graduate recon school. Most any biology major can teach 9th graders biology, not all of them can be succesful biologists, hence the difference in pay and status. It is supply and demand in its truest form, yet you people refuse to see it? Why?

That was simply an example of skills learned in the military. Pray tell- what job in the military teaches you how to deal with children, especially learning deficient ones?

If the nfl only paid 45k a year we'd have a lot more real players and less people like pacman jones, etc. It'd be a better league. People like you make me sick.

You do need to be smart to be teacher but the main thing for me to look for in a good teacher is whether not he or she enjoy teaching and is patience with the children trust me you will know that be watching other children interact with the teachers on the school campus....

Naturalbeauty that is very well put. I never said teachers were stupid, I was just pointing out that until the requirements for teaching are harder and the pay is higher, it will not be a very sought after profession...

    Hope this helps

The statement that "anybody can be in the infantry" is inane also. Just because you don't need a college degree to do it doesn't mean it's not a demanding and difficult job- there's a reason less than 1% of the U.S. population does it, and that reason isn't money.

Vinnie, your NFL example makes NO sense w/ the discussion pertaining to the military.

What point are you trying to make? That people don't go into the military for monetary reasons? Or that they do? A better example to use would be when people become police officers, firefighters and teachers. All of which are under-paid and under-appreciated fields...yet so many still go into these professions voluntarily.

Like envied stated; there are some bright and not-so bright people in all fields (even the one with 100-yards). Brett Favre for example has a 120+ I.Q.; while numerous other football players have less than half that. The point is that not all 'smart' people go into certain specific fields only; and not all 'dumb' people are the constituents of any specific field(s) either.

Further proof people..that yes; a BlackBerry is truly a user-friendly device 'aspecific' to all learning curves. :-).

So the original poster bashes the men and women that die for our country and I say you don't have to be smart to be a teacher and I catch the heat, oh brother...
I saw *nothing* in the post from Envied that could even remotely be construed as "bashing the men and women that die for our country." Please support your argument here Vinnie.

And as for having the intelligence to be a teacher? As a matter of fact you do have to be intelligent to be a teacher. You can only teach someone else a concept when you understand the concept well enough yourself. Can't just pull anyone off the street and expect them to understand a concept well enough to teach it to others.

You stated military men and women were less qualified, less qualified than what? All it takes to become a teacher is a piece of paper. Is the military schooling they went through less valuable?
    1. They are less qualified to teach children, there's a lot more that goes into learning to teach than just learning the subject matter.
    2. It is more than a piece of paper, it's what that piece of paper represents, all the work and learning that went into EARNING that piece of paper.
    3. No, the schooling that you and I went through in the military is no less valuable, just not the right speciality. Imagine sending a quartermaster out as a sniper and you'll get the idea of what I'm saying here.

One thing you're missing here is the perspective... If you saw someone walking down the street with a Purple Heart on their chest and you KNEW they were never in combat, wouldn't you be a bit upset? Same thing here, the people who teach went through a lot to get the education required to be able to teach others.

Never said they wouldn't make something of themselves in the service. I meant without the military they would be working a job making 11 dollars an hour.
Vinnie... I work at a job where I make $12.00/hr. Does that make me less of a person? (BTW... That's really good pay for this area.)

Madcat the problem with Vinnie is that he can only see his point of view and he is always right. He also likes to say ignorant things just stir up controversey. Look at my responses to him where I completely discounted his nonsense. He has yet to respond to me, what he did instead was ignore my response based on fact and actual knowledge and attack someone else. You are wasting your time tryong to have a real conversation with him!
