Nokia was hurting significantly before RIM was, shouldnt RIM be the Canadian Nokia (if you wanted to be more accurate). Also Nokia is/was a significantly larger corporation than RIM, with a very wealthy backer (Microsoft) and are still struggling. RIM has just begun this path and hopefully can use Nokia as a guide to avoid pitfalls.
Does this mean win mobile is in trouble also?
The elimination of Canadian R&D facilities is a growing trend that's actually a bit worrisome: apparently GM wants to pull out most of its plants out of Canada, Merck-Frost has already decimated most of their labs in Montreal, RIM is laying off people...even the company I worked for has shut down all its R&D facilities in Ontario.
The Canadian government should take a break in trying to get the world to buy its tar sand oil and actually think about the tech sector in Canada, and what it needs to do to keep it healthy. I actually left Canada to work in the US simply because there were lots lots more opportunities in the US in the field of Science, it's a bit ridiculous that I had to do that.
Nokia at one point was a very successful phone manufacturer and I would always buy Nokia handsets but because of the fact the Nokia OS is useless I moved to Blackberry and I'm staying with Blackberry for the foreseeable future.
Why was this thread moved to the Off-Topic Social Forums? Isn't it as relevant as all the news posts about Apple and other competitors??
Sounds like me. BC is a disaster (biotech/pharma) for any one with experience :(
