I agree with you. However, the bigger picture dictates the outcome. They say "don't hate the player, hate the game". The people that are punishing him, [ironically] are the same people that make the rules.

No reason that Magic Johnson should be singled out to benefit from the sale although also no reason why he would not be part of a group to buy the club. Debatable that E(a)rvin "Magic" Johnson has been injured in any way by this incident. African Americans and other minority groups have made great strides and a lot of money because of pro sports. True that white people in the management group have made a bunch of money beginning with Abe Saperstein and the Trotters and that the arhletes both white and black had to litigate and fight the owners to remove restrictive contract clauses and get their share.
Sorry cant agree with all this. Fair enough racist comments are awful, but this is not the way to rehabilitate somebody.
Also find it truly amazing that you can you use recordings that he has not given permission too... its entrapment. His personal/private views (which I do not agree with) are his own.
I feel that legally you cant ban anybody for life.. or fine anybody so much because of a certain view point.. freedom of speech and so on.
I rather he mas made to clear the streets, help disadvantaged people or something along those lines.
This will just be a big fat check for legal teams now, as you cant force anybody to sell...

Sean Combs also had an interest. His worth is around 700 million. And jay-z as well. But someone here posted that the "team should go to magic johnson".....it should go to whoever bids and wins...simple as that. It's not a consultation price, it's business.

I don't think the goal is to rehabilitate the man, it's to protect the image of the NBA. As for the legality, the first amendment protects citizens from the government infringing on speech, the NBA and it's franchises have their constitution and bylaws to follow and I'm sure it's within their scope to dole out lifetime bans, fines, and force sales.

As pointed out previously, His Airness Michael Jordan is the (majority) owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. Additionally, Shaq is a minority owner of the Sacramento Kings (the majority owner of which is a guy of Indian origin,) and Jay-Z was a minority owner of the Brooklyn Nets until he had to give up his share because he was starting up his sports management agency. I believe his stake was bought by a guy of Taiwanese origin.
Entrapment is not an issue because: 1. his "girlfriend" is not law enforcement, and 2. these recordings were made with his full knowledge. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences, especially in private businesses/associations. What do you think would happen if I went up to my boss and said "this company sucks. All the employees here except me suck." Do you think he'd be very understanding of my 1st Amendment rights?
BTW, this is hardly the first time a sports team owner has been forced out for racist/perceived racist behavior. Look up Marge Schott.
Now if only we can get the Redskins to change their name.

Maybe that way native Americans who probably displaced an earlier group some 10-20 thousand years ago could choose to sell memorabilia and perhaps the pc people would be satisfied. Of course Chief Wahoo would have to go. All honkies need to go to Indian owned casinos and give back some of the loot that the US government stole from them years ago.

Probably too rambling and shouldn't have responded to the comment without knowing who the "we" the commenter is involved with in trying to change the Washington Redskins name. Political correctness (pc) is very popular these days. My points were several .
1) The name Redskins did not in itself seem offensive to me and the logo does not seem demeaning to me. Some of the other stuff can be demeaning. Probably next on the list are other sports teams like the Chicago Blackhawks. Maybe then some of the place names such as Indiana. Is the term indian in itself considered demeaning?
2) No doubt the white man treated the then " native Americans" shabbily and violated many treaties in the nineteenth and even twentieth century. This should be made up in a reasonable way for both parties. We have no record as to how these " native americans" treated previous civilizations who might have claimed ownership of the land. These problems are much more important than the name of a sports team.
3) Political correctness does not extend to the redneck, hillbilly or honky. Thus the rambling fantasy about lil Abner etc. Incidentally Al Capp might have had character issues like Sterling..
4) Some Indian groups might like to maintain Indian names if that allows them to form businesses profiting from these. This has a parallel in the Indian casinos although in some places Indians do not have true control of these enterprises and general conditions on the reservation are poor. Some of this may be addressed by the government but Indians must also develope leaders.
5) All of this rambling is off topic but wasn't the comment about changing the team name also off topic?

Steering clear of the racism debate, still seems to me that free speech, actually costs millions in the good ole U S of A. Didn't even need to use the Patriot Act this time either.
Millions is peanuts. We are paying more than that to have more than that to have free speech. Even let the extremists speak as long as they don't advocate violence. Perhaps when they open their mouths we will recognize them for what they are. And if they slander or commit a civil crime against an individual they can be sued. All those lawyers have to have jobs too.
