Hopefully this topic will not need to last for long but it might be interesting to keep an eye on and share what is happening near the borders of the Ukraine and most of which is surveillance, refueling and supply. I am using Flightradar24 and of course can only pick up air traffic that has it's transponders on. Feel free to comment or ask questions!

First up this is the tracking for an unmanned drone that flies at altitudes of beyond 50,000' and is used for surveillance.NATO Support for Ukraine (Temporary)-screenshot_20220327-183345.jpgNATO Support for Ukraine (Temporary)-screenshot_20220327-184951.jpg

The same drone as in the first comment is now on it's way towards Sochi and will probably set up and do a few laps of the Black Sea.NATO Support for Ukraine (Temporary)-screenshot_20220327-202033.jpg

Another plane we will see pop up is a heavily modified Beechcraft used in radio surveillance with nomenclature Yank02 and normally flies over Lithuania. More on that later but yes this plane has Lithuanian support unlike BB10 phones.NATO Support for Ukraine (Temporary)-screenshot_20220327-205529-2.jpg

We will see a lot of NATO traffic around the airport in this city in eastern Poland which is close to the Ukrainian border. Lots of Globemasters and C130 Hercules and even the Antonov AN 124 move in and out of here. There are also a number of BlackHawk helicopters based here and go under the names DUKE##.NATO Support for Ukraine (Temporary)-screenshot_20220327-210516-2.jpg

Not sure it's as much of a show of NATO support for Ukraine as it's a show of deterrence to Russia, for if they had any ideas about if they could push things beyond Ukraine. Interestingly, the show was probably more needed back in Dec, Jan and early Feb.

I have a question for the more knowledgeable, are these activities I'm bringing up normal procedure or is it this heightened preparedness?

Interesting. Wasn't experience something like this on Crackberry I wouldn't have thought what you are showing is normal procedure but difficult to know if it's heightened preparedness.

I don't think most of it is normal. I know someone who has family in Romania. They said the sky got crazy with NATO airplanes right after the Russian invasion started. Lots of it is probably deterrence. If you were Putin, what would you think if you started seeing all that NATO air traffic, in comparison to also your assessment as to what successes and failures your air forces had. Putin had his strategy for threatening a nuclear option. Do we think all this NATO activity is just for fun?

I followed this little helicopter from Warsaw to a train yard near the Ukrainian border. It landed for less than 5 minutes and appears to be back on it's way to Warsaw.
