Whilst I can sympathize, (a little!) for Americans who are having to pay more for their gas - the price is still artificially low, and their pain is self-inflicted. You know how much Europeans have to pay for gas? The equivalent of $7.50 per gallon

The USA consumes over 25% of the world oil production, though accounts for only 5% of the world population. Costs of gas are going rise a whole lot more as the world demand for oil sky rockets. In China alone a rapidly increasing percentage of it's 6 billion population now have the financial means to purchase their first car. Their simply will not be sufficient oil to meet world consumption - and costs will increase further.

American cities are built around car usage, large freeways, big cars, big commute and low population levels who live in the city centres. American cities also typically lack an efficient public transportation system, and your trains are antique - European countries are criss-crossed and linked with ever expanding, modern, effecient high-speed (200mph+) rail networks.

The bottom line is that Americans are going to have to adjust. Purchase, (and produce) more fuel efficient cars, use the car less, use alternative means of transport, live closer to their place of work and redesign city centers.

Before you decide to walk to work consider the price in the UK. I paid 1.07 per litre today. Roughly speaking that's over $2.00 a litre in comparison to the US !!!

    3.55 last night.
    3.60 today.

Yeah, Europeans have it rough...but they have a public transit system that owns us out of the box.

Whatever. I point and laugh at Hummers and Titans these days. Plus, the way traffic is around here, I am faster than them on my bicycle.

$1.16 per litre (0.264172052 US gallons), so that's around $4.39 a gallon, still lots less than other parts of the world such as Europe.

I've done the bike commuting quite a bit in the past, and it can be very enjoyable, as long as it's not a death-defying nor soggy ride...

    Cheers,
