I love this question: it impacts our screen configurations and really gets to the heart of things ! I have been through a couple of iterations, but have settled on: left: KYBD and right: Vlingo.
My ground state screen has 4 icons: Messages, INTERNET folder, VZN Navigator, and Voice Dialing. My INTERNET folder contains my Browser and several of Jonathan's launchers: active radar AccuWeather, Y! Mail, Y! Spam, and Reuters.
My first excited state/screen contains 16 icons:
In rows, my set of sixteen is (1) same as above; (2) Contacts, Call Log, Media, WeatherBug; (3) Calculator, Maps, MemoPad, Video Camera; and (4) Options, AP, WSJ, Camera.

WHY are you wasting a convenience key on keyboard lock ?????????
all you have to do is hold down the A/* key for a second and it locks the keyboard..
use the Convenience key for something else... just redundant and wasteful in my opinion.
i hate to accidentally launched the camera...it drains battery!!!
I changed my convenience keys several times but right now that is what i'm settle on...
those two are apps that i mostly used that doest have any keyboard shortcut...
i really wish that there are apps that can make me customized the shortcut keys
