And that's exactly my problem with the "rule". It doesn't say what it means, and it doesn't mean what it says.

How about this:

What if my personal preference is to treat others opposite of their personal preference? (Because I'm a jerk.)

Technically, I'm obeying the "rule", but that's not "what it's suppose to mean"...

And how about this:

I'm an A-Type personality and constantly want to be given attention to non-stop. Does that mean I give non-stop attention to the introvert who does not want attention?

The problem with the saying, "Treat others how you want to be treated" is that it really means:

"Treat others how you would want to be treated as long as that person is okay with how you treat them and it is generally socially acceptable." That's what it's really saying, but of course it doesn't sound as nice.

Originally it was in the negative: don't do to your neighbor what's abhorrent to you. There's a difference if you think about it because it's more geared to doing nothing. But of course psychopaths still wouldn't follow it.
