well you can be offended all you want if thats what you are....i dont really care....this forum is exactly what i fight for. i comend your father/mother which ever is the marine for the service. as i said before military experiance is not everything but it is important. so as you sit there and get **** hurt because people have there own views and opinions that conflict with yours just remeber that its the ones who serve in battle that gave you your freedom of speach. not the community organizer.

Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Wilson, were presidents without any real military experience who did a pretty decent job using force. It is an American tradition and the Constitution clearly states the military comes under the control of a civilian leader.

We are all, or we all should be thankful for the job our military does. Every male in my immediate family has served. My nephew is in Iraq now in the Army (sorry Vinnie, lol) But military experience doesn't mean they'd be a better president. I think the last ex-military presidents to do a decent job were Truman and Eisenhower.

143 days in the senate? seems to me that obama was elected to the senate 4 years ago...as far as the military experience goes i'll admit i am a bit divided...i see the pluses with our commander in chief having military experience, but i've also read (not sure if i agree with it) that having a CIC that does not have military experience/ties provides the United States with a good checks and balances when it comes to military vs diplomacy issues....thoughts to ponder

It sounded odd to me too russet so I did a little research, the 143 days was the total number of days obama had been physically present in the senate when he announced his plan to run for president...

Here's the point; military experience (vast or not)...is in NO WAY an AUTOMATIC precursor to competence.

Military experience is valuable in many respects; but once again it goes back to the first paragraph of this post. In particular, this year's election can be looked at using more variables than just military experience...these other variables have been discussed at length in the elections '08 thread.

As exelant noted; there are many presidents with little or no military experience...who have proven to be competent and effective as the U.S. President. (Clinton, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Wilson, etc.)

No one is psychic...just as we can't 100% guarantee the success of a future president, we can't 100% predict their failures. Either Obama or McCain will be added to one of the columns.

Personally, my vote has been cast for Obama/Biden. I voted for Bush in 2000, definitely didn't vote for him in 2004.

143 days is probably the average for each senator during that time...dont forget that they have offices in DC, and usually TWO offices in their respective state...being present on the senate floor means they're actually doing less work than they would be if they were in one of their offices...i am not registered in either party but again, i just cant vote for mccain this time around especially the way he handled himself during the debates....i wish he had run in 2000, how he lost to bush is still amazing to me...mccain has been and will continue to be an outstanding senator, i just i have no confidence in him as a president at this point...

Like Def, I have already voted for Obama by mail. My wife and I hand carried our ballots in to drop off. They were very large in Colorado this year. Very important stuff about Right to Work and when life begins. I am usually registered as an independent, but I changed it to Democrat to participate in the caucuses. After that experience, I prefer a primary election instead, lol.

I have voted for a couple of Republicans -- Ford and Reagan. I have never voted for a Bush, neither one. Never voted for Carter, but I like him. He is an admirable ex-president. When it comes to foreign policy, anyone remember how worried many were about Reagan?

An interesting note about Iraq, during the lead up to the war, the hawks in the administration like Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld had deferments to avoid service in Viet Nam -- and those advising restraint like Powell and **** Armitage (Naval Academy, 3 tours in Viet Nam), were ex-military. Sometimes the people most likely to commit the military are those who never served.

I will be glad when the election is over and we can get to the serious business of critiquing the one who wins, . It is going to be an interesting four years.

It is also true that McCain was born on US property in a foreign country. The Obama birth place story has about a million reporters looking into it. If it was true, it would have been all over the news. I have no doubt it is not true. If it turns out to be true, good luck President McCain or President Biden.

I don't really think the founding fathers could have imagined an economic system such as the one we have today -- one where those with the most money control the government; as Jack Abramoff tried to do with his plan to only have Republicans in office. They did worry about the rich having too much power, but the founders believed the people would vote them out of office. They didn't foresee the current system where the rich actually hired politicians to do their work for them. A system where you can't vote them out. They worried the rich would try to take power for themselves. I don't think they foresaw the rich merely using politicians to get richer.

Obama wants everyone to get rich and have the American dream, but why should I pay 25% to 28% of my income in taxes and the wealthy pay 20%? It's not fair and someone should do something about it. So there is no mistake, spreading it around means we have a couple wars and multiple bank bailouts to pay for before there's any "spreading" around.

Unfortunately you are so right. All of the opposition to Senator Obama and all
of the defense of Senator McCain has really amounted to nothing more than
one long series of right-wing, talk radio talking points. Not a lot of independent
or critical thinking.

I think that we have a steep and difficult hill to climb no matter which candidate takes office. We have to remain patient for change will take quite a long time to kick in. In my opinion, it will come down to the V.P match up. I can't get past the idea of Palin being in the white house. Biden seems to be more convincing of being ready to help Obama lead us out of this mess. I could be wrong, though.

Everyone can't get rich..........because "everyone" isn't willing to work for it. It takes sacrifice and risk. The only thing that should ever be equal is "opportunity". What you do with that opportunity is what makes the difference.

You should not........period. You should pay 15% to 20% and so should everyone else. The government should do with less. Fairness is not everybody sending the bulk of their money to Washington so that "they" can decide who to send it back to and how much to send. That is Socialism.

I don't really understand what you meant here so let me just simply say I am 100% against the bailout and I am furious with all of those who proposed, advanced and voted for it. The principal of the bailout was wrong. Government should not pick the winners and loosers....period.

As for "spreading the wealth" I think I've use the word here before, but that concept has already been tried in other places around the globe and it failed everytime. It's called Socialism.

These are not right-wing talking points......they are my core beliefs. I was not raised to believe that I deserved or was owed anything......other than an opportunity. I do not hate the rich. I would like to be rich someday.

Our federal government stinks at just about everything they do. So the idea of giving them "more power" and "more money" is NUTS!

But I guess there are enough people out there looking for a free payday that are willing to overlook the fact that "spreading the wealth around" is not the principal America was founded on.
