Former MLB player Frank Castillo dies - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Former Major League Baseball pitcher Frank Castillo drowned while swimming in a lake near Phoenix, Arizona, authorities said Monday. He was 44.
Castillo and a friend were on a pontoon boat Sunday at Bartlett Lake, according to a statement from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. Castillo got into the water to go swimming. He did not resurface.
Sheriff's deputies searched the area and recovered Castillo's body Monday afternoon, the statement said.
Castillo made his MLB debut in 1991.
Throughout his career, he played for the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins.
Castillo's family released a statement to CNN affiliate KVIA, thanking friends and fans for their support.
"Frank was a wonderful son, terrific brother, and an extraordinary father to his two beautiful girls," it read. "Everyone who knew Frank loved Frank. We are devastated by this loss."

Richard Kazmaier, a Heisman Winner Who Passed on the N.F.L., Dies at 82

As a junior and senior, he led Princeton to undefeated seasons and was named to most all-American teams. As a senior, in separate player-of-the-year polls, he won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Trophy. He was voted the Associated Press athlete of the year in 1951 — ahead of Ben Hogan and Stan Musial.

But football was not the focus of his life. When Princeton’s dean of students told him he had won the Heisman Trophy, he recalled: “I thought it was nice. Then I went back to class.”

Kazmaier was drafted by the Chicago Bears but declined to join the team, or any other one. Player salaries then were often less than $5,000 a year. Instead, with a degree in psychology, he pursued a master’s in business administration at Harvard, receiving the degree in 1954.

After Harvard came three years as a Navy officer. He then started a career in sports marketing and consulting, and in 1975 he founded Kazmaier Associates. He had no regrets about giving up football.

“I knew I could earn more money in business than I could in professional football,” he said, “but there was more to it than that. I had achieved everything I could achieve as an individual and as part of a team. I felt there was nowhere to go but down.”

Berthold Beitz, German Steel Industrialist Who Saved Jews, Dies at 99

The rise of Berthold Beitz to the head of ThyssenKrupp, the steel conglomerate, is the stuff of modern German legend. He played a critical role in the rebuilding of postwar Germany into an industrial powerhouse.
Yet when Mr. Beitz died on Tuesday at 99, he was remembered as much for his efforts to save hundreds of Jews and Poles from the Nazis while stationed in Poland during World War II.

Mr. Beitz (pronounced BITES) worked for an oil company when the war broke out. Instead of being called up for active duty, the Nazis sent him to supervise the Borislav oil fields, which had fallen into German hands with the invasion of Poland in 1939. Oil was crucial to Hitler’s war machine, and Mr. Beitz wielded considerable power. He used it to create unneeded jobs that spared hundreds of Poles and Jews from being deported to death camps.

Born on Sept. 26, 1913, in the eastern German city of Zemmin, Mr. Beitz trained to become a banker, but his career took a turn in 1938 when he joined the Shell Oil Company in the northern port city of Hamburg. His experience there led to his war duty in Poland.

After the war, Poland awarded him its highest civilian honor, and the Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Israel, honored him as a Righteous Among the Nations, its highest recognition for non-Jews who saved Jews from the Holocaust.

“I saw how people were shot, how they were lined up in the night,” he told The New York Times in 1983. “My motives were not political; they were purely humane, moral motives.”
