Interesting story for you all:

On of my cashiers went into labor today while working. Her husband is deployed to Afghanistan. I had called an ambulance and she handed me a piece of receipt tape with a phone number on it.

I called the number and was immediately connected to her husband's stateside company commander. He told me that due to her premature delivery he was unable to bring her husband home until the previously arranged date and time.

I thanked him for his time and gave him my name and number as a point of contact for the next day or so.

A couple of hours later I get a phone call while at lunch from the company commander. He tells me that my cashiers husband was in critical condition after some "incident". Now there's no telling when he will be home or if he will even make it through.

Today has severely sucked.

From what the commander was able to tell me from the incident this man saved lives on more than one occasion during his deployment and today was a result of his going above and beyond yet again. I hope he's able to come home soon. She has no family and his closest family is somewhere in Washington. That's a days drive at least.
