You have to watch the very first view of the wreck. The SOB was traveling on the road parallel to the track in the same direction as the train. Turned at the intersection and went around the gate on the wrong side of the road. He blew right through the red light in the left turn lane to do it. You can't get a signal to turn when the crossing signals are activated.
The other views in the report have been edited to shorten it.

Thanks for the insights. Well SOB lost that race trying to save 30 seconds or less. Trust me I know from cleaning the bone chips and splattered remains from locomotives that there are definitely idiots out there that think it's a game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, Goodtime Charlie....

That's a TSB report for an accident a few years back. And here is an animation for it:




I was a passenger in the train that was immediately behind the one that plowed into the stuck tractor trailer at the raised crossing. The low float got stuck on the crossing. They were trying to pull it off with another truck from behind but didn't succeed in time. They fortunately had the foresight to quickly disconnect the chains before the train hit, otherwise it would have been a fair bit worse and a few nearby buildings/houses would have also been severely damaged.

Once things settled down, they drove our train through the accident site to hook onto the front train and to pull back all the passenger cars (minus the locomotive that had gone off the rails) to a demarcation point about 5km back. Then we all boarded buses to continue our journey. In hindsight I should have realized it wasn't going to be a good day for me as a train passenger because the first leg of my journey earlier in the day had already been messed up when that train had hit a pedestrian before it got to my station.
