    Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. {...edit: I actually very much enjoy all earlier Genesis except maybe first few albums. I'd not say that everything before Duke was too artsy, but the most earlier stuff is indeed very period based and with such a strong influence from Peter and the way he was at that time...}. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent {...indeed, because Phil was stepping further up to fill the void...}. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. {...disagree, once Phil became the main influence it essentially became hard to distinguish between his solo work...} It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. {...agree, but one can hear all of that a lot clearer in the earlier Genesis work before they essentially became heavily pop rock based...} In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. {...again, the writer of this dialog obvious wasn't interested in examining lyrics from earlier Genesis work like from Wind and Wuthering, Trick of the Trail, The Lamb, Selling England, etc... where the lyrical and musical craftsmanship is even higher, in my opinion...} In Too Deep is the most moving pop song {...pop rock, that is indeed kind of what they became. Still very enjoyable but not the same kind of enjoyable as their earlier work in my opinion...} of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. {...most Genesis work after Phil became the dominant influence essentially all became commercial in my opinion...} Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

    {...I've edited out the parts where he was instructing the escorts and added my own edits regarding Genesis, but anyone remember where this was from and the significance (without looking it up on google)....}
