My last dentist pulled a fully impacted wisdom tooth as a straight extraction to save time. I have jawbone shards coming out of my gums for six months.

    It is that bad.

Yeah, that sounds bad for sure! I had all four wisdom teeth removed at the same time, they had to cut my jawbone on both sides for each of the two lower ones (maybe that's what caused the TMJ). I looked like a damned chipmunk for days with all that swelling and cotton gauze in my mouth, woke up the first morning on a red, blood soaked pillow ( ). The really dumb thing is that I did it the Tuesday before Thanksgiving so I would only miss a couple days of work, bad idea! The only good thing besides getting it over with was the pain killers!

Is that part of the free healthcare thing? Sounds like your dentist might need a refresher on modern dentistry. I hate it too and even have some wisdom teeth extraction issues but it would have only been worse had I not been going regularly.

One thing I will highly recommend is a WaterPik. It has increased my gum health to new levels. I used to get 4s and 5s when they were checking my gums and now I'm mostly 3s.

    Yes you did.

I cannot watch that movie just because of that scene. In fact I have a hard time watching Dustin Hoffman at all.

Could be worse -- it could be Harvey Keitel.

Holy **** I laughed so hard at that. People were asking me if I was alright. I had to tell them that no, no I wasn't.

I hear horror stories like this all the time that just make me believe my dentist is frickin' Superman. I had all 4 wisdom teeth impacted and pulled at the same time. Went into surgery at 9am, was out by 9:45am. Dad had me home by 10:30am and I spent the day in and out of consciousness from the pain meds. By 8pm, I was refusing my pain meds and left Mom and Dad's (against their will) to go home to my fraternity house for a party that started at 10. By 2am, I was in line at Taco Bell, and threw the rest of my pain meds out. No issues since.

It also depends on the age of the patient. Young people recuperate much faster

No, dentists are separate from that. Although you can see the emergency room on call dentist and have OHIP cover the costs.

You want to see Canada rebel? Try to touch our socialised medicine. That's what we would say "from our cold dead hands" about, not guns. It's wonderful to never have to worry about getting sick.

True that...had my tonsils done at 26 and it was 4-6 weeks of pain. My brother was 3 and playing outside the next day.

Being fresh out of college and needing the money more that dental care (so I thought at the time anyway), I had put off going to the dentist until I could not take the pain any longer. Now, as I said earlier, I go every 6 months for cleaning and checkup no matter what!

Yeah, I was only 23 when I had mine taken out. It was the sawing of the jawbone stuff that got me down I'm sure, was in for around 2 hours maybe?
