OK so I'm going to tie together the 70s talk with the cars talk and my college years when I lived on spaghetti. Without sauce.
My first car while I was going to college was a 74 Super Beetle with a sunroof that developed the deplorable habit of leaking. It also developed the habit of honking every time I turned right. And then it decided it would be fun if it set itself on fire.
For some reason this terribly flawed car was some kind of magnet for thieves. It was stolen twice.
It looked exactly like this one, even on the inside. I put the shield on the inside so the sun wouldn't crack it.

I liked that bc of the story with it... not the car. I still cannot understand how anyone actually likes those cars. HOWEVER, I do give it the respect it deserves bc of how it eventually developed into my favorite (super) car manufacturer!

I've owned well over a dozen cars and trucks. But my favorite was a first generations (second body shape) 69 Mercury Cougar XR-7 with a 351 cu in (5.8 L) 4-barrel V8.

Oh I loved my little bug!!!! It was my first car and I learned the stick shift ALONE on an empty cul de sac....got it for $1000 from the original owner one week before going to college.
Served me well until I got my first new car, a Honda Civic hatchback.
But I LOVED my bug. Wish I'd never sold it.

    Why?

I had two of those suckers. 1985 and 1988. They stopped making them because they didn't sell very well in USA. In Canada they were pretty popular.
It handled crappily (is that a word? it is now!) in the snow no matter how many sandbags I threw in the back, I couldn't carry many passengers, and I was always paranoid that I'd back into someone while stopped on a hill (because of the manual transmission). Plus not having AC was really starting to get to me. I'm sure I would've liked a 4 wheel drive with all the bells and whistles a lot more!

My bro and sis in law had one as a rental on their recent trip to KC. My bro hated it . The trunk was so small they couldn't even fit their luggage in it!

I love mine, but still love to tool around in cars. The SUV just will never drive like a car, but they can be extremely useful.
